Several neighbors also dialed 911, but say no one answered the call.
Bette Emore says it was her mother's neighbor, the fire chief, that finally
got help to the scene.

The Rockbridge County Sheriff's Department answers the 911 calls.
There were two dispatchers on duty that night.

The new 911 system was put into effect in March and is not fully operational
The enhanced system requires at least nine thousand address changes.
Officials say these changes should be complete and the system fully
operational by mid summer.

That's not to say there isn't anyone supplying work to the region.
Snowshoe Silvercreek is the county's largest employer with around a thousand

This used to be the site of one of the world's largest tanneries, employing
three to four hundred people at a time. Now it employs no one.

The new owners of an old dairy barn may soon be producing art instead of
The Floyd Community Center for the Arts is buying the Old Jacksonville Barn.
The plan is to use the barn as a place to sell locally made crafts.
Board members also envision art studios where crafters pass along their
skills to students.
The hay loft maybe used for dances and theater productions.
They say in the end, the barn's proximity to the Blue Ridge Parkway will
make it an economic success for the area.

Well, the outlook is looking good for sking at Snowshoe.
Last night's temperatures dipped into the 20s allowing the resort to
commence snowmaking for this year's ski season.
Snowshoe has the largest snowmaking system in the Southeast and Mid-Atlantic

The projected opening date is November 17th.

Dale Earnhardt wasted no time getting the five bonus points as he would
lead early in the race.
Michael Waltrip blew a left rear tire and hit the wall bringing out the
first caution of the day with less than 40 laps in the book.
Ernie Irvan made a move and he was strong taking the lead and holding off
Earnhardt for several circuits around the track.
Points leader Jeff Gordon was running with Dale Jarrett back in the pack
but he was having handling problems as he tried to move up front.
