((Separatists in Quebec, Canada's largest province wanted, in effect, to become their own country. The great majority of independence seekers are French-speaking, and claim the rest of Canada is abandoning French culture in society. In general they felt they would be better off socially and economically managing themselves. Quebec's premier, Jacques Parizeau, rallied hard for separation, and last night in his losing speech, he shocked Canadians by blaming non-French immigrants and big business for the loss. Today he apologized for those remarks, then delivered an even bigger blow by resigning, saying he planned to do so all along if the secession vote failed.
So now, it's unclear now who will lead Quebec province. The new leader may call for a new secession vote. Canada's prime minister, Jean Chretien, had invited Parizeau to discuss the reforms Quebeckers want. Chretian met with Liberal party colleagues, to assess the impact of the vote. Political analysts say the narrow victory hurts the prime minister. And in downtown Montreal, the politics coincided with some street fighting between the two camps. Police said there were several injuries and 40 arrests, and a fire was set at the office of the federalist leader.
