The Henry County teen accused of murdering a teenage girl faced a judge this

Ron Jones was in the courtroom and has an update.
Jean, 16-year old Tommy Helms of the Bassett area has been charged with
first degree murder in the shooting death of 15-year old Lavina Scales.
And according to police testimony, this was not Helms' first serious

(( Last Wednesday Lavina Scales' body was found on the road side in the hills
of Henry County.
The medical examiner say Scales was shot eight times in the head with two
different hand guns.
Investigators say after an intense investigation, 16- year old Tommy Helms
became their primary suspect.
But they say he was not only wanted in this homicide, but three additional

Yesterday Helms turned himself in and is being held without bond.
The judge will decide later if he will be tried as an adult.
But as Helms was escorted by police, the victim's father went after him.

Helms has also been charged with malicious wounding in another shooting
where he shot a man three times in a failed robbery. Jean?

Authorities are piecing together clues in hopes of identifying a decomposed
body discovered over the weekend in Danville.
Assistant Chief Medical Examiner David Oxley says it is the body of a young
young, black female.
The skeleton was discovered Saturday behind Motley's Warehouse on Piney
Oxley says the body may have been there from several weeks to several
The Medical Examiners office will now clean the bones in an attempt to help
better identify the young female and how she died.
President Clinton has said it again -- He thinks American troops belong in
Bosnia, once there's a peace agreement for them to enforce.

Supporters of parental notice legislation say Delegate Dick Cranwell is
performing a political masquerade.
But Cranwell says he's practicing political moderation.

Lynchburg House of Delegates candidate Gil Cobbs is renewing his call for
his Republican opponent to return what Cobbs says is "tainted" campaign money.

The highly infectious and lethal ebola virus caused terror in Zaire this
summer, killing 244-people.
But now Russian military doctors claim they have a cure.
In these once top secret Russian military labs, doctors have developed a
treatment for Ebola.

The Centers for Disease Control cautions while this has worked on animal
models, the breakthrough has only been in the laboratory.
But it says it wouldn't hestiate to use the Russian IGG to treat one of
their own lab workers should they become infected.

Recently we reported about the dangers of malnutrition among the elderly.
Now, another study confirms that being slightly overweight may not pose a
health risk for people over 70.
Elderly men and women who are as much as 20 pounds overweight may be
healthier than their thinner counterparts.
Health risks begin to rise for elderly people who are 50 to 75 pounds
The study from St. Luke's-Roosevelt Hospital in New York, suggests older
people who are only moderately overweight might be dieting needlessly.
Still, critics caution the findings could be distorted-- because by age 70,
many of the heaviest people may have already died.
A woman who has suffered from paranoid schizophrenia says the voices in
her head haunted her for a decade.

Health advocates want the beer industry to keep its hands off of Halloween.
The Center on Alcohol Advertising wants beer makers to withdraw ads that
use Halloween characters because they encourage kids to drink.
The Center says the average age for kids to start drinking now is 13.
A beer industry spokesman says beer ads for all occasions are aimed at
adults, and there's no need to drop the promotions.

Nearly 30-thousand volunteers in Detroit patrolled the streets last night
for what is traditionally known as Devil's Night.
Over the years, Halloween Eve in Detroit has been marred by vandalism and
pranksters-- including a staggering number of deliberately set fires and other
Last year was the worst in 10-years, and this year residents took action.
Citizens armed with flashlights and two-way radios patrolled the streets
That support seemed to do the trick-- a little more than 40-fires were
confirmed by midnight--that's well below last year's 182 blazes.
It is often said that kids don't look as young as they used to.
And some of the students at Raleigh Court Elementary School looked a
little more mature for their classes today.
Grandparents spent most of the day in the classroom celebrating Halloween
for "Grandparents and Older Neighbors Day."
It's part of the PTA's outreach program that opens the school to the public.
