A one- man crime wave started last night with an armed robbery in Campbell
County and ended in the suspect's shooting death near Richmond this morning.
Brad McCombie kidnapped a convenience store clerk during his alleged
Kimberly McBroom spoke with the clerk-- who described his bizarre ordeal.

(( For 10 hours, Brad McCombie was a fugitive on the run.
His alleged crime spree started Tuesday with the armed robbery of the Buzz-
Inn Market on Waterlick Road.
Police say McCombie then shot at a Campbell County deputy who tried to
apprehend him after the robbery.
After fleeing on foot, police say McCombie then showed up at this Campbell
But this time, it didn't stop with an armed robbery.

McCombie then abducted Dorsey at gunpoint-- and forced him on a three- hour

Dorsey then ran for about three miles, until he found a telephone and
called the police.
Dorsey's call brought relief to his worried family.

Bret Dorsey's adventure at the end of Brad (McCumby's) McCombe's gun ended
in a Richmond suburb this morning.
Within a half hour of Dorsey's release, a Henrico County police officer
spotted the car.

Then, according to Henrico police, gunfire from inside the car McCombie was
The first shot that hit its target knocked Officer Andi Margiotta to the

Before the gun battle was over, the officer had been shot twice, but had
unloaded two seven bullet clips in McCombe's direction.
The next officers on the scene found a wounded comrade and the already dead
body of Brad McCombie in a nearby ditch.
Henrico's prosecutor will look into the officer's conduct.

Henrico Police say Officer Margiotta is expected to make a full recovery.
They also say they expect he'll be cleared of any wrongdoing in his
encounter with Brad McCombie.

Martinsville girl will be tried as an adult.
16- year- old Tommy Helms is charged with first- degree murder in the

A Southside lawmaker seeking re-election is now accusing his Republican
opponent of distorting his record.
Delegate Whitt Clement says Nancy Keel accused him of voting against
Governor Allen three out of four times.
Keel says she got the figure from a state Republican party campaign tactic
called the "Allen Index."
It measures how many times a lawmaker voted with the Governor on a sampling
of key votes.
Clement says he supported the Governor in 81 percent of the votes in 1995.
Keel countered Clement's attack by saying she received her information from
a number of sources, including the Christian Coalition.

Both sides also disagree on Clement's record on welfare reform and violent
Roanoke parents who depend on the Head Start program for child-care are now
considering a class- action lawsuit.
That because of changes in the state's administration of federal head
Some families say its them to pull their children from the program.
Since the Department of Social Services took over administration of Federal
Head Start funds October first, twenty families have been declared ineligible.
And those who remain in the program are now required to pay ten percent of
their family income to participate.

The Director of the Council on Child Day Care says the state has increased
funding for head start programs by more than one million dollars.
Since the Department of Social Services assumed the administration of head
start funds, Betty Ruppert (ROO-pert) says almost twice as many centers and
twice as many children are benefitting from the federal funds.
Democratic Senate Candidate John Edwards says Meals and Wheels and other
programs could be cut- if a Republican plan to consolidate aging programs with
Medicaid goes through.
He says a state study last year showed no real savings with the plan.
This morning, Edwards told seniors he does NOT support the consolidation
programs, unlike his opponent, Brandon Bell.

Atlantic to add more jobs in Roanoke,

Sub-standard customer service has prompted a hiring spree at Bell Atlantic.
The phone company says it will add 120 people to its offices in Roanoke,
Richmond, and Norfolk to address the problem.
The company has already added 106 employees.
It plans to complete the hiring by January.
No word on exactly how many new workers the Roanoke office will get.
This comes at a time when Bell Atlantic is using early buyouts
and layoffs to cut its total work force and expand use of outside

A pair of Salem police officers climbed the old Lakeside roller coaster and
spotted Richie Bolton and Bob Wilcox stranded in the trees.
They couldn't find Joe Cunningham. They were so sure he'd drowned,
Cunningham's wife was notified that he was presumed drowned.
Even HE thought he was a dead man as he got tangled up in the water-soaked
firefighters' turn-out coat he was wearing.

Stranded rescue workers were ultimately plucked out of the water by
Lifeguard 10, along with the Tultex employees.
But that kept the medivac chopper so busy, there was no one to answer the
equally frantic call for help from a roof top in Roanoke.
