A one- man crime wave started last night with an armed robbery in Campbell County and ended in the suspect's shooting death near Richmond this morning.
Brad McCombie kidnapped a convenience store clerk during his alleged rampage.

(( For 10 hours, Brad McCombie was a fugitive on the run.
His alleged crime spree started Tuesday with the armed robbery of the Buzz- Inn Market on Waterlick Road.
Police say McCombie then shot at a Campbell County deputy who tried to apprehend him after the robbery.
After fleeing on foot, police say McCombie then showed up at this Campbell Avenue store.
But this time, it didn't stop with an armed robbery.

He says McCombie also forced him to get forty- dollars out of an automated teller machine.
Once the pair made it to Henrico County, McCombie let Dorsey out of the car.

Bret Dorsey's adventure at the end of Brad (McCumby's) McCombe's gun ended in a Richmond suburb this morning.
Within a half hour of Dorsey's release, a Henrico County police officer spotted the car.
Ellen Qualls reports on the violent conclusion.

(( A short car chase that ended in a collision.
Then, according to Henrico police, gunfire from inside the car McCombie was driving.
The first shot that hit its target knocked Officer Andi Margiotta to the ground.
But the shot to the chest did NOT pierce Margiotta's bullet proof vest.
Before the gun battle was over, the officer had been shot twice, but had unloaded two seven bullet clips in McCombe's direction.
The next officers on the scene found a wounded comrade and the already dead body of Brad McCombie in a nearby ditch.
Henrico's prosecutor will look into the officer's conduct.

Sub-standard customer service has prompted a hiring spree at Bell Atlantic.
The phone company says it will add 120 people to its offices in Roanoke, Richmond, and Norfolk to address the problem.
The company has already added 106 employees.
It plans to complete the hiring by January.
No word on exactly how many new workers the Roanoke office will get.
This comes at a time when Bell Atlantic is using early buyouts and layoffs to cut its total work force and expand use of outside contractors.
