Dead Presidents is a powerful movie about the broken promises of the Vietnam
War and the way that war ruined lives.

This ambitious little film tells the story of Anthony, a young black man
from the Bronx played by Lorenz Tate.
His first employer in high school is Kirby--Keith David--the neighborhood
numbers runner.
In the late sixties, Anthony joins the Marines and ends up in an elite recon
unit in Vietnam.
The war scenes are intense and horrific and bring terror and paranoia to
vivid life.
When Anthony returns to the Bronx, the world has changed. He can't find
work, his friends are on drugs or on the dole.
In desperation, he and a group from the old neighborhood set out to rob an
armored car taking old money to Washington DC to be incinerated. Things go
wrong and the heist ends tragically.
Dead Presidents has a lot to offer. Good perspective on the war and its
effects on a black veteran from what many considered a 'white man's war'.
This movie gets a "B". The film tries to do too much, take on too many
issues, and cover too much territory.

(( Christopher Shawn Wheeler has been held at the Christiansburg Juvenile
Detention Center since allegedly shooting Deputy Cliff Dicker in the head last
December.
His attorneys argued the juvenile system is where he should stay.
Defense psychologists testified Wheeler is a product of a chaotic
environment in which family members introduced him to drugs, alcohol, guns and
sex by age 11.
His lawyers say he deserves a shot at rehabilitation through the therapy,
education and structure juvenile detention can provide.
((JONATHAN VENZIE/DEFENSE LAWYER: I THINK ANYBODY DESERVES NOT A SECOND CHANCE
BUT A FIRST CHANCE TO LEARN AND GET IT RIGHT. HE'S NEVER HAD THAT CHANCE.
HE'S BEEN IN THE SYSTEM NOW FOR A YEAR AND HIS BEHAVIOR SHOWS THAT HE KNOWS AND
CAN ADAPT TO THAT ENVIRONMENT. ))
But Wheeler's teacher at the detention center testified she's overheard
Wheeler make numerous disturbing comments about guns, drugs, even assassinating
people.
She says he bragged to another student that he "did a cop in the head."
Prosecutors argued it's not in the interest of public safety to keep Wheeler
in a system which would have to set him free at age 21.
((KEITH BLANKENSHIP/WYTHE CO. ASSISTANT PROSECUTOR: I THINK PUBLIC SAFETY DOES
HAVE TO BE THE COMMONWEALTH'S CONCERN AND I THINK THE COMMONWEALTH ALSO HAS TO
BE CONCERNED WITH THE VICTIMS. WE FOCUS A LOT ON THE DEFENDANT AND HIS ALLEGED
PROBLEMS, BUT WE HAVE TO ALSO REMEMBER THAT WE'VE GOT A MURDERED WYTHE COUNTY

(( It's what pollsters call a statistical dead heat.
The margin of error is three and a half percent -- and the numbers are
closer than that.
There are undecideds.
But the measure of comfort for the GOP is that every time the question's
asked, Republicans are slightly on top.
Who would voters like to see have control of the General Assembly?
Statewide, 47- percent say Republicans.
44- percent say Democrats.
Nine percent say they're not sure.
In a gender breakdown, 52- percent of men want a Republican legislature.
Only 42- percent of women feel that way.
Along racial lines, 56- percent of white voters favor Republican control --
compared to two-percent of black voters.
Of course, voters aren't picking a party, they're picking a person.
But looking at individual races--
in the State Senate, the numbers go 46- percent Republican, 41- percent
Democrat, and 13- percent still not sure.
In the House of Delegates it's closer.
45- percent favor Republicans.
42- percent favor Democrats.
And again, 13- percent are unsure.
Top Republican George Allen has increased his favorable job performance
rating one point, to 54, over the last three months.
sot standup
Virginians have a new "single most important issue."
And it may favor Republicans.
For the first time under the Allen Administration, taxes and government
spending top the list of voter concerns at 27- percent.
That's still in that statistical dead heat with education -- at 24% -- which
Democrats claim is their issue.
So pay attention on Tuesday.
