(( Anna Wentworth/Arts Reviewer: Dead Presidents is a powerful movie about the broken promises of the Vietnam War and the way that war ruined lives.
This ambitious little film tells the story of Anthony, a young black man from the Bronx played by Lorenz Tate.
His first employer in high school is Kirby--Keith David--the neighborhood numbers runner.
In the late sixties, Anthony joins the Marines and ends up in an elite recon unit in Vietnam.
The war scenes are intense and horrific and bring terror and paranoia to vivid life.
When Anthony returns to the Bronx, the world has changed. He can't find work, his friends are on drugs or on the dole.
In desperation, he and a group from the old neighborhood set out to rob an armored car taking old money to Washington DC to be incinerated. Things go wrong and the heist ends tragically.
Dead Presidents has a lot to offer. Good perspective on the war and its effects on a black veteran from what many considered a 'white man's war'.
This movie gets a "B". The film tries to do too much, take on too many issues, and cover too much territory.))
