won't be held, but officials aren't saying why.

A Roanoke mother gets a 5- year suspended sentence for neglecting her small
Tammy LeShawn Harvey has also been ordered not to conceive or adopt another
child for twenty years.
Her son, Anthony, was treated for second degree burns and internal injuries
back in March.
Medical records also show the toddler had cocaine in his system.
The abuse happened while the boy was in the care of Harvey's friend,
Basham was sentenced to thirty years in prison earlier this week.
Harvey's attorney said the mother should've received a light sentence
because she did not cause the physical scars.
But prosecutors argued that Harvey left the emotional ones.

In May police found the body of 68- year- old Charlie Carter in a Northwest
Police say he was stabbed in the neck several times.
The judge agreed that Parker needs some type of treatment for alcoholism,
and ordered that she get it after she's released from jail.
Bad news for One hundred to 150 workers at the Volvo-GM Heavy Truck plant in

no one is saying why.

The Republican bid for control of the General Assembly has produced
competitive races across the state.
But few have been more bitter than the campaign that pits House Majority
Leader Dick Cranwell against republican challenger Trixie Averill.

Not long after the Flood of '85, Congress authorized a major flood reduction
project for the Roanoke River.
So how's it working?

looking at this problem since 1972, and we haven't turned the first load of

-such as Roanoke Memorial Hospital- -have been "flood-proofed."
But the river project is nowhere. The plans have been drawn. Congress and
City Council have approved them. The money is authorized. So what's the

Now they say soil in the river banks are contaminated.
City officials hope four years worth of environmental testing will be
completed by next Spring.
They've quit predicting when work on the river bank will actually begin.
Roanoke COUNTY has done a few things.
For example, a new sewer line along Garst Mill Road was redesigned to
incorporate STORM water.
((AND YET ROANOKE COUNTY IS NOT PART OF THE FLOOD REDUCTION PROJECT. THE
COUNTY CHIPPED IN SOME MONEY FOR A STUDY. ALL THE LOCAL GOVERNMENTS DID, AFTER
THE FEDS OFFERED A MATCHING GRANT. TOTAL COST TO THE TAXPAYERS: 690-THOUSAND
DOLLARS. THE "STORMWATER MANAGEMENT" STUDY FOCUSES ON 16 WATERSHEDS AND
TRIBUTARIES THAT FEED INTO THE ROANOKE RIVER. IT WON'T BE FINISHED UNTIL NEXT
