Northwest wind is a sign that big changes are underway. No sense raking

Up to 150 workers at the Volvo-GM Heavy Truck plant in Dublin will start the
new year without their jobs.
The layoff takes effect January third, when the plant will cut its
production to 64 trucks per day.
It currently produces 80 trucks per day.
The company blames the layoff on a sudden, industry- wide downturn in the
Plant officials say Volvo's production has been at an all- time high for the
last two years.
But they say the economy slowed during the second quarter, and many
customers have withdrawn orders.
The market conditions will not effect the 200- million- dollar plant
expansion that's currently under way.
A public hearing will be held next week for State Highway officials to
announce possible changes to a Danville intersection where two young children
12- year old Jami Renee Earles and her 10- year old brother were recently
killed when the car they were in collided with a dump truck.
Family members say the Route 265 and Elizabeth Street intersection is a
death trap and want something done.
Some residents say the accident could've been avoided if a bridge were
built over the intersection.
Three family members were arrested for staging a protest at the site.
V-DOT and Danville officials met yesterday to review traffic data and

Monday, Tonya Basham was given a 30- year sentence for abusing and
neglecting Anthony Harvey.
The boy is now with his paternal grandmother, and is reportedly doing well.

He campaigned with House candidate Newell Falkinburg this afternoon at a
dialysis clinic in Roanoke.

Paul David Peterson admitted he sold a gun to a convicted felon, but he told
reporters the way to change the law is not to go out and break it.
Peterson was a charter member of the Club, but he says he thought it was

In May police found the body of 68- year- old Charlie Carter in a Northwest
Police say he was stabbed in the neck several times.
Just a few days before he was killed, Carter was released from prison after
serving time for murder.
The judge DID agree that Parker needs some type of treatment for alcoholism,
and ordered that she get it after she's released from jail.
Another record gain for the DOW today as it pushed up just shy of 17 points.
The DOW closed at 48- hundred- 25.
Nasdaq closed at one-thousand- 65, a gain of 8 points.

Now they say soil in the river banks are contaminated.
City officials hope four years worth of environmental testing will be
completed by next Spring.
They've quit predicting when work on the river bank will actually begin.
Roanoke COUNTY has done a few things.
For example, a new sewer line along Garst Mill Road was redesigned to
incorporate STORM water.
((AND YET ROANOKE COUNTY IS NOT PART OF THE FLOOD REDUCTION PROJECT. THE
COUNTY CHIPPED IN SOME MONEY FOR A STUDY. ALL THE LOCAL GOVERNMENTS DID, AFTER
THE FEDS OFFERED A MATCHING GRANT. TOTAL COST TO THE TAXPAYERS: 690-THOUSAND
DOLLARS. THE "STORMWATER MANAGEMENT" STUDY FOCUSES ON 16 WATERSHEDS AND
TRIBUTARIES THAT FEED INTO THE ROANOKE RIVER. IT WON'T BE FINISHED UNTIL NEXT
The CITY still intends to replace two "low- water" bridges, expand some
culverts, widen the channel... all this, they say, without altering the
"quality of life" on the river.
Engineers are quick to say the flood REDUCTION project would not prevent the
kind of once- every- 100 years disaster we had in '85.
It'll help, some, but the river would still overflow.

Every year the Roanoke River flood reduction project goes undone ...the
cost goes up.
It's now estimated at 38-million dollars.
Congress okayed up to 39-point-4 million and would have to RE-authorize the
