tonight.
It happened in Rural Retreat.
Authorities have not released the names of the persons involved but say one

Last Monday, he turned himself into authorities investigating the shooting
death of Lavina Scales.
Prosecutors in this case want to try Helms as an adult.

In Wythe County, a teenager is charged with killing a sheriff's deputy last
December.
A judge ruled last week that 16 year old Christopher Shawn Wheeler will
stand trial as an adult.
In Virginia, juveniles can be tried as an adult when they're 14.
Some say the system waits too long to intervene, giving juvenile offenders
little or no punishment for their early offenses.

interests of the wealthy.
Hawkins, however, dismisses the criticism.

THE HAYSTACK.
Like Glaise, Hawkins is a familiar face.
For 14 years, he's served in the legislature.
If re-elected, he says one of his goals will be keeping young people at
home.

Optical Cable of Roanoke County has temporarily postponed plans to sell its
stock to the public.
A good portion of the money it wants to raise will go toward doubling the
size of its plant.
Bell Atlantic will add 120 people to its offices in Roanoke, Richmond, and
Norfolk to address what it calls sub-standard customer service.
It plans to complete the hiring by January.
Advance Auto Parts IS going ahead with a major expansion.
The Roanoke retail chain make the addition at its regional distribution
center, but no new jobs will be created locally.
Unemployment in Roanoke and Lynchburg remains low.
In September Roanoke registered a three-point-five-percent jobless rate,
Lynchburg came in at four-point-four-percent.
The First Citizens Bank of Raleigh will increase its presence in our area.
It has purchased First Union branches in Martinsville and Henry County.
Roanoke Gas and a number of other area companies posted quarterly earnings
this week.
The utility had a loss for the most recent quarter, but its annual profits
rose six-percent despite going through the third warmest winter in the last 60
years.
Meanwhile, Charter Federal Savings of Bristol says its net income dropped
44-percent.
Five affiliated national banks, the Patrick Henry Bank, Blue Ridge Bank,
South Boston Bank, Peoples Bank of Danville, and the First National Bank of
Rocky Mount ALL report earnings per share up AT LEAST 43-percent for the first
nine months of 1995.
And up to 150 workers at the Volvo-GM truck plant in Dublin will lose their
jobs next year.
In January the plant will cut its production from 80-to-64 trucks a day.
Checking the Dow Jones Industrial Average for the week, it rose 84-points,
closing at 4825.57.

((3 years ago Frank Beamer couldn't buy his way into a bowl game. But my
have times changed. Four professional bowlers scouted the Hokies 31-7 drubbing
of Syracuse and the fans behavior after that hame did absolutely nothing to
hurt the Hokies Reputation.
KEYNA CORY/CARQUEST BOWL CHAIRMAN: THEY TOOK 21 THOUSAND PEOPLE TO THE
GATOR BOWL AND I'M CONVINCED THAT THEY'LL TAKE AT LEAST THAT AMOUNT OF PEOPLE
TO THE CARQUEST BOWL. I'VE WATCHED THEM...I'VE WENT TO SOME OF THE AWAY GAMES
AS WELL, AND I'VE WATCHED THEM FILL UP THEIR BLOCKS IMMEDIATELY AND LOOKING
OFR MORE TICKETS. SO THAT TELLS US A LOT OF GOOD THINGS ABOUT THE FANS AND
THAT THEY WOULD TRAVEL.
But by beating Syracuse the hokies likely played their way out of the
Carquest, and into a much bigger, million dollar plus payday in another bowl.
WE DON'T HAVE A PROBLEM HAVING VIRGINIA TECH BACK 2 YEARS IN A ROW AND WE'D
HOPE THAT THE VIRGINIA TECH FANS WOULD WANT TO COME BACK TWO YEARS IN A ROW.
ESPECIALLY WITH THAT NEW STADIUM WE'VE GOT DOWN THERE FOR THEM .
They folks at the Gator Bowl would take tech right now if they could, and a
return trip to Jacksonville wouldn't be so bad for the Tech program.
But the Hokies are holding out hope for something even bigger. Like a date
at the Sugar Bowl with an opponent like Notre Dame. And Frank Beamer hasn't
given up hope that he also may be playing in the Orange Bowl.
YOU KNOW, I THIK VIRGINIA TECH HAS A LOT TO OFFER AND I THINK THESE BOWL
PEOPLE FEEL LIKE WITH OUR SUPPORT AND THE WAY WE PLAY, I THINK THEY'D THINK WE
HAVE A LOT TO OFFER.
Unfortunately for college football fans, none of the bowls may be able to
offer anything for almost another month.
WE COULD BE STANDING HERE DECEMBER 3RD MAKING OUR FINAL PICKS AND THAT'S NOT
GOOD. WE DON'T WANT TO DO THAT. WE'D LIKE TO GO AHEAD AND MAKE AN
ANNOUNCEMENT IN THE NEXT COUPLE WEEKS BUT IF DOESN'T LOOK NEW THAT WE'LL BE
ABLE TO DO THAT.
STILL A WAITING GAME. LOT OF FOOTBALL TO BE PLAYED.
Tech will try to keep it's big bowl hopes alive when it takes on Temple
theis coming saturday at RFK stadium.

It's 17 feet tall and 20 feet wide, and goes for the low, low price of

It's used to dry sheets of fabric, upholstery, and carpeting as long as a
football field.
The machine has six different sections.
It's operator can regulate each one so it has a different speed,
temperature, and airflow.
