Israel is a nation in mourning.
Its slain leader, Yitzhak Rabin, was laid to rest today in Jerusalem.
His funeral brought dignitaries from all over the world including President
Speaking at the funeral Clinton urged the world to carry on Rabin's quest
The 73- year- old leader was gunned down Saturday following a peace rally in
His accused assassin told an Israeli Court today that he killed Rabin
because Rabin wanted to give his country to the Arabs.

Israelis wept for a native son, a straight-forward soldier turned peacemaking
Leaders from the world over mourned a fighter, who came to believe his
country's future required compromise with former enemies... and who paid with
his life for that belief.
President Clinton's eulogy was almost a pep talk, encouraging Israelis to
complete what Rabin began, and to heal their wounds.

Rabin's mourners included Arab leaders who have never before set foot in
the Jewish state, who came as a show of support for Rabin's determination to

And there was a searing momento. A sheet of lyrics from Rabin's breast
pocket, pierced by a bullet, and smeared with blood. A song for peace Rabin
had joined in singing a large peace rally just before he was gunned down.
After the speeches, the last march, the final salute the last graveside
goodbyes and Rabin was lowered to his final place of rest. The first time in
thousands of years of history, people here are saying, a Jewish leader slain by
a fellow Jew.))
Members of Roanoke's Jewish community gathered this morning to pay special
tribute to Rabin.

Rabbi Fox joins us now to talk about how members of his congregation are
dealing with Rabin's untimely death.
What is the reaction today among the valley's Jewish population?
(What do you think this will do for the peace process? Do you expect it to
bring the nation of Israel together or create a greater division between Arabs
(Do you think the assassination was a political or theological statement?)
(Because the alleged gunman was Jewish and not Arab, do you think this will
make a difference when it comes to any kind of backlash?)
(The guman, a 27-year old law student who was an opponent of the peace
processs, said in his confession this morning in court that Rabin was giving
his country to the Arabs, what kind of following does this movement have?)
Wythe County Police say one man is in the hospital, and another in jail
following a game with a gun last night.
28- year- old Christopher Brown and 28- year- old Ronnie Gordon -- both of
Rural Retreat -- reportedly were playing with an automatic weapon when it went
At the time, Gordon was allegedly pointing the gun at Brown and a bullet
struck him in the head.
Brown is in critical condition.
Gordon is in jail, charged with malicious wounding.
Police say alcohol was involved.
Amherst County authorities are still investigating a trailer fire that
killed a Monroe man early yesterday morning.
Firefighters were called to this home on Woodrow Avenue just before 1:30
They arrived to find the trailer engulfed in flames.
The body of an elderly man was recovered from the wreckage but police have
not released his name.

A historical landmark went up in flames yesterday in San Francisco.
St. Paulus Lutheran Church was dedicated in 18-94 and had survived the
great San Francisco earthquake of 19-06.
The early morning blaze also spread to a nearby apartment building, but no
one was injured.
There is no word yet on what caused the fire.

Early returns in Poland's presidential election show incumbent
Lech (vah-WEN'-sah) Walesa and an ex-Communist headed for a runoff.
(vah-WEN'-sah) Walesa, and Aleksander (kvahsh-NYEV'-skee) Kwasniewski each
have won about a third of the vote in a field of 17 candidates.
The run- off takes place November 19th.
This is Poland's second democratic presidential election.
And early returns show former Soviet official Eduard Shevardnadze cruising
to victory in presidential elections in the former Soviet republic of Georgia.

Governor Allen is attacking state Democrats for taking 100-thousand
dollars from an oil pipeline company that he says has ties to Libya.
ALLEN is under fire from the DEMOCRATS for taking 100-thousand dollars
from a pork company charged with polluting.
Allen is among the state's top elected officials out stumping today.
He'll be in Roanoke on behalf of General Assembly candidates.
Political analyst Larry Sabato says 39 of those General Assembly races are
too close to call.
Among those close races, the Roanoke area House of Delegates race between
Democrat Chip Woodrum and Republican Newell Falkinburg, and the Martinsville
area House of Delegates race between Democrat Roscoe Reynolds and Republican
Sabato holds out little hope, however, for Republican Trixie Averill in her
high profile contest with Democrat Dick Cranwell.

Sabato says he considers Senator Brandon Bell of Roanoke to be the fourth
most vulnerable Republican in the Senate.
In Southside Virginia, Republican incumbent Charles Hawkins is telling
voters he's proud of his service in Richmond.
But Democratic Challenger Joyce Glaise thinks she would be a better
representative for the 9th district.

Glaise has accused incumbent Charles Hawkins of mostly representing the
interests of the wealthy.
Hawkins, however, dismisses the criticism.

Like Glaise, Hawkins is a familiar face.

A government advisory panel today is discussing whether to allow new AIDS-

which they say would have cost the town millions of dollars and would have
