While the fiscal bills are for a short period of time.. the borrowing bill
through December 12th.. the spending bill through December first.. the White
House says it's not the time but the subtance that's the issue.
Playing off the fact the President went golfing after his statment GOP leaders
pledged they would hold firm.

While the borrowing bill.. which temporarily increases the government's debt
limit is on it's way to the white house, Congress will be pushing the
deadline on the short term spending bill. The senate which is in recess
until Monday must cast one more vote.
Should no compromise be reached, the
President will veto it.
And that means come Monday at midnight while essential services will
continue, 800,000 federal employees will be out of work, offices will be
closed, veterans' benefits will be stalled, and there won't be anyone to accept
new social security applications.

merge Virginia Tech's College of Education with another department.

(( In a closed- door meeting this morning, Tech President Paul Torgersen
assured College of Education students and faculty their programs and jobs are

That means eliminating administrative salaries for an estimated savings of a
quarter of a million dollars.
But some students and faculty feel the university is diminishing their worth
and their degrees.

But Torgersen says the proposal isn't anything new. Two years ago it was
suggested as part of a restructuring plan.
That plan cut one and a half million dollars from the college.
Provost Peggy Meszaros hopes the General Assembly will look favorably on the
ongoing campus- wide cost- saving measures when it considers future funding.

The Henrico police officer who stopped a crime spree in a blaze of bullets-
killed a Campbell County man last week in self-defense.

That's the conclusion of Henrico prosecutor Toby Vick about the fatal end to
Brad McCombie's alleged multi- county crime spree.
Vick says Officer Andi Margiotta's (mar-jee-OTTA's) case could not have been

Vick says an eyewitness testified the officer was hit by McCombie before
Police say McCombie's crime spree began in the Lynchburg area with burglary,
two armed robberies, abducting a store clerk, and firing at a sheriff's deputy.
It's called a turning point toward peace in Bosnia.
Bosnias Muslims and Croats today signed an agreement to strengthen their

Rhode was working for the Christian Science Monitor when he was taken
captive almost two weeks ago.
It's the worst fire in recent memory in Baltimore.
The eleven alarm blaze broke out at a warehouse- in Southwest Baltimore.
The Hollins Street Exchange houses about 50 businesses.
Several business owners there say they lost everything; many don't have
Homeless people trying to keep warm accidentally started the fire in an
abandoned warehouse next door.
Firefighters from 40 departments were there- They used at least a half dozen
cranes to pour water on the fire.
No reports of any injuries.

He also says he's reviewing the possibility that other irregularities

The story originally planned by 60 Minutes was to include an interview
between veteran correspondent Mike Wallace and a former employee of a tobacco
But the former executive had signed an agreement not to disclose what he
knew about the industry.
Citing legal reasons, C-B-S pulled most of the interview.
Justice Lacy says she cannot see the media necessarily backing down
consistently as it appears C-B-S did.
Lacy was at Hollins College tonight disussing Virginia's role in shaping the
Six National Guard armories in Virginia are closing down, the victims of
cuts in defense spending.
On the list is the armory in Altavista, which has housed the National Guard
for more than thirty years.
Town officials say losing the Guard is like losing part of the community.
