If neither side backs down, 800 thousand federal employees will be
furloughed and a number of government services will shut down tomorrow at
Virginia Senator John Warner says a government shut-down can be avoided.
But only if Congress and President Clinton work together on the budget.
The senator says he supports G-O-P efforts to reduce the size of government
and government spending.
Warner says there is still time to accomplish those goals without gridlock.
Some critics say the gridlock is causing the American people to become
impatient with the new Republican led Congress.
But despite the discontent Warner says he's still the most popular
Republican with ALL registered voters in Virginia.

A recent News 7-- Roanoke Times poll shows 53-percent of voters have a
favorable opinion of Warner.
That's up from July.
But within his own party Warner faces stiff competition from economist Jim
G-O-P support for Warner has held steady at 41-percent, while Miller has
seen a slight increase to 39-percent.
But Warner says statewide support is what really matters.

The News 7 poll also showed Democratic candidate MARK Warner-- no relation
to the incumbent-- would face DEFEAT at the hands of EITHER Republican, if the
election were held today.
But in a GENERAL election, JOHN Warner is the MUCH stronger candidate
against MARK Warner.
It's a move that President Clinton hails as a major step toward peace.
Rebel Serbs have agreed to give up the last of their holdings in Croatia to
The agreement resolves a dispute that threatened to derail the U-S led talks
in Ohio on peace for the Balkans.
Croatia had threatened to attack the remaining bit of Serb-held territory if
rebels refused to accept the plan for its reintegration.

Rabin's widow visited his grave in Jerusalem today.

Threats have been made against Peres as well, and his security people did
not want him to attend the rally.
It now seems clear that Rabin's killer had help.
All of the suspects arrested are orthodox jewish extremists.
Many of the radical extremists are settlers who live in the West Bank.
They disagree with Rabin's views of compromise with palestinians.
In Connecticut, a jet carrying 72 passengers made an emergency landing

A big turnaround for one of the largest employers in the greater Danville
Dimon Incorporated reports profits for the first quarter of fiscal 1996 came
in at six-million-dollars.
That's a big improvement over the same period a year ago, when the company
posted a loss due to merger related activities.
Dimon was formed last April when Dibrell Brothers of Danville combined
forces with Monk Austin, a North Carolina tobacco processor.
The company says it had increased sales in the first quarter because of
continued reductions in the worldwide tobacco surplus, and increased foreign
It was also a strong quarter for Burlington Industries, another large
employer in our area.
Burlington reports its fourth quarter profits are up 18-percent.
The textile giant says its house and carpet divisions had higher earnings.
The apparel division wasn't as strong.

Urban renewal closed the doors to the once bustling business district.
Now members of the Henry Street Revival Committee say the time is right for
Noel Taylor says the committee is in the process of looking for business
owners who will relocate to the area.
He says the committee wants to attract a wide variety of businesses.
