An Appomattox man is dead following a bizarre accident.
Police say 31-year-old David Ray Maddox was driving south on Route 29 near Five Forks Road in Amherst County last night when the door of his pickup truck swung open.
Maddox and one of his passengers fell out.
The truck ran off the road and hit a cable box.
Maddox died at the scene.

In Rockbridge County, heavy rainfall and cold temperatures proved a bad combination for some Tidewater Boy Scouts who were camping in the mountains.
Emergency crews rescued 20 scouts suffering from hypothermia early yesterday, guiding them over a gorge filled by a rain-swollen river.
Rescue workers say the group was cold and wet but in good spirits when help arrived.
All the boys have been treated and released from nearby hospitals.

Dimon Incorporated reports profits for the FIRST quarter of fiscal 1996 came in at SIX-million-dollars.

That's a BIG improvement over the same period a year ago, when the company posted a LOSS due to merger-related activities.
Dimon was formed last April when Dibrell Brothers of Danville combined forces with Monk Austin, a North Carolina tobacco processor.
