An Appomattox man is dead following a bizarre accident.
Police say 31-year-old David Ray Maddox was driving south on Route 29 near Five Forks Road in Amherst County last night when the door of his pickup truck swung open.
Maddox and one of his passengers fell out.
The truck ran off the road and hit a cable box.
Maddox died at the scene.

Virginia Senator John Warner says a government shut-down CAN be avoided.
But only IF Congress and President Clinton work TOGETHER on the budget.
Some critics say the gridlock is causing the American people to become IMPATIENT with the new Republican led Congress.
But despite the discontent, Warner says he's STILL the most popular Republican with ALL registered voters in Virginia.

A recent News 7-- Roanoke Times poll shows 53-percent of voters have a favorable opinion of Warner.
That's UP from July.

G-O-P support for Warner has held steady at 41-percent, while Miller has seen a slight increase to 39-percent.

But in a GENERAL election, JOHN Warner is the MUCH stronger candidate against MARK Warner.

In Rockbridge County, heavy rainfall and cold temperatures proved a bad combination for some Tidewater Boy Scouts who were camping in the mountains.
Emergency crews rescued 20 scouts suffering from hypothermia early yesterday, guiding them over a gorge filled by a rain-swollen river.
Rescue workers say the group was cold and wet but in good spirits when help arrived.
All the boys have been treated and released from nearby hospitals.

It was snowing in the area this morning.
The New River Valley was hit particularly hard.
State police say many roads are covered with snow, making conditions there hazardous.
Several minor accidents have been reported.
Schools in Radford City and Pulaski County are operating TWO HOURS LATE.

Dimon Incorporated reports profits for the FIRST quarter of fiscal 1996 came in at SIX-million-dollars.

That's a BIG improvement over the same period a year ago, when the company posted a LOSS due to merger-related activities.
Dimon was formed last April when Dibrell Brothers of Danville combined forces with Monk Austin, a North Carolina tobacco processor.
