No deal.
That's the word from the White House.
Now parts of the federal government are heading for a shutdown.
So what will a government shutdown mean here in Southwest Virginia?

For starters it means confusion for area seniors and veterans.
They're afraid that their government checks will stop coming.

Ayscue (Askew) did say anyone who wants to apply for new benefits would have to wait until after the shutdown was over.
Meanwhile, for the majority of government employees, they'll be off the job.
That means they won't get paid for a while.
Government workers have been told to report to work this morning.
That's when they'll be told whether to stay or go home.

It's expected to be a short work day for some federal employees today.
The governments spending authority expired at midnight, and a late night meetin between President Clinton and Congressional leaders failed to come up with acceptable emergency spending legislation.
That means government operations will soon be shutting down.
But what does that mean for Southwest Virginia?

White House aides sit down with Republican lawmakers again today to discuss an emergency spending bill.
They are hoping to reach a last-minute deal to minimize the effects ot a government shutdown.
With no agreement, thousands of federal workers will have to be furloughed.
But how will the shutdown effect our part of the country?
