erupted- killing a teacher and a student.

at the Richland High School in Lynnville, Tennessee.
Apparently a 12th grade student opened fire- just before classes began.
A Business teacher is dead along with a 16 year old student who was shot in

A judge today fined a Danville woman for her role in an accident that killed
12- year old Jamie Earles and her 10- year old brother, James died in the
October 19th accident.
Norma Jean Daniel was driving the children.
Today Daniel was found GUILTY of failing to yield the right of way.
Since the accident, the Virginia Department of Transportation has placed
larger stop signs at the intersection of Elizabeth Street and Route 265.
V-DOT has also installed a 45- mile an hour sign for motorists approaching
But some argue nothing will prevent similar tragedies except an overpass.

Two teens have been found guilty of malicious wounding in Old Southwest
Roanoke... one of them is the youngest criminal ever processed through the
courts as an adult.
The other, Leo Harper, Junior, pled "no contest" today.
He and 14-year old Davon (duh-VON) Anderson beat up two different men the
The first incident occured in an apartment house on Mountain Avenue. About
three hours later, they assaulted a man at the corner of Fifth and Mountain and
left him lying in a pool of blood.
Harper lives just a block away.
The judge can still sentence Harper and Anderson as juveniles, or use the
full range of adult punishment...up to 20 years in prison.
The search for John Edwards' replacement on Roanoke City Council may not be
quick and easy.
It now appears that members of council are divided on the type of candidate
they should select.
With Edwards' election to the State Senate, the remaining members of
council must appoint someone to fill his seat until a special election is held.
Mayor David Bowers says he wants someone who could continue to serve, but
Mac McCadden and the other republicans on council say they favor someone who
will promise not to run next May.

Washington D-C- Mayor Marion Barry is predicting a quote-- "total and
speedy" recovery from prostate cancer.
The 59-year old says he was diagnosed last month-- he's now undergoing
tests to see if he should consider radiation or surgery.

Barry's cancer is confined to the prostate and was detected early.
Prostate cancer is the second leading cause of cancer deaths in men-- but
it's easily treated if it's caught before it spreads.
It's been proven useful in fighting heart trouble-- but now angioplasty may
be effective in preventing strokes.
Under the technique, a tiny balloon is threaded into arteries in the neck
and brain-- and inflated to clear blockages that can lead to strokes.
It's hoped the procedure will someday be a safe alternative to surgery.

A study in this week's Journal of the American Medical Association finds

The children are NOT mentally retarded, but the lower IQ does affect
quality of life.
Between 1950 and the late 1970's. more than 22 million children were born
in the U.S. to women taking PRESCRIBED barbiturates during pregnancy.
The study was conducted by the Kinsey Institute at Indiana University.
