A Lynchburg man was killed this morning when he lost control of his car on Route 460.

It happened around 6:15 just east of the city of Bedford.
State police say 45- year- old Thomas Monroe Douglass was headed west on 460 when his car dropped off the right side of the road.
Douglass apparently over- corrected, lost control of his car and flipped it over in the ditch.
He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police do "not" believe he was wearing his seatbelt at the time of the crash.

Saturday, police found 83- year- old Vernon (LOFF-in) Laughon locked inside the trunk of his car-- while Horton was in the driver's seat.
The man told police he only remembers being choked, and then waking up in the trunk.
Horton has been convicted in the past of numerous burglary and larceny charges.
A preliminary hearing is set for December 19.

The 28-year old was practicing with his wife (Ye-Katarina Gor-de-Ava) Yekaterina Gordeeva in Lake Placid New York when he collapsed and died of an apparent heart attack.
He was rushed to the Adirondack Medical Center, but was pronounced dead shortly before 12:30.
Grinkov and Gordeeva won gold medals in the 1988 and 1994 Winter Olympics.
The couple also skated with the Stars on Ice show.
They were married in 1991 and had a daughter- Daria in 1992.

A Lexington police officer is accused of assaulting a woman while arresting her.
Shelby Katz of Lexington filed a warrant against Officer Mark Ramos-- charging him with assault and battery.
According to a news release, the alleged attack occurred October 28th.
Ramos is suspended with pay while state police investigate.
The Lexington Police Department says it won't comment until the investigation is complete.

On the final play of Saturday's emotional game against Virginia Tech, Gieck stuck his left leg out in an apparent effort of trip Hokie Safety Antonio Banks.
Banks avoided his leg and wound up in the endzone, but Gieck didn't avoid disciplinary action.
Gieck accepted the penalty last night and admitting he stuck his leg out, but he says he never intended to trip or hurt Banks.
He says the action was made out of frustration, and that he knows it was wrong. In the statement he also apologized to both schools.

In a tournament where classification doesn't matter a great deal is at stake. The three day eighteen tournament gives fans a rare opportunity to see haw one team stacks up against another than it would never see during the regular season. First round action get s underway December 26th. Patrick Henry begins play against Byrd, then Salem starts its rivalry with the 1995 State Champion runner-ups in Glenvar. Followed by Durham, NC 4A power Riverside taking on Franklin Co. And the first day concludes with last season's tournament champions and Northside.
BILL POPE/NORTHSIDE HEAD COACH: I'D HAVE TO SAY THE FLEMMING, WITH THE STRONG POWER THEY HAVE BEEN THROUGH THE YEARS, WE'D HAVE TO BE ONE OF THE REAL STRONG FAVORITES THIS YEAR, BUT LAST YEAR IS LAST YEAR, AND HOPEFULLY WE'LL COME OUT PRETTY WELL IN THE FIRST ROUND.
Flemming's arch rivals joins the Kernels in some valley hoops history to the floor.
WOODY DEANS/PATRICK HENRY HEAD COACH: WE'RE JUST EXCITED ABOUT BEING INVITED AND PLAYING IN THE TOURNAMENT, SO I THINK IT WILL GIVE IT A LITTLE PROFILE AND SOME ADDED PUBLICITY TO THE TOURNAMENT TO HAVE THE CITY SCHOOLS IN IT.
Selecting the two city schools shows a commitment to home town teams, but adding Riverside shows the selecting committee's desire to expand the tournament.
DOUG WATERS/NATIONS BANK REGION EXECUTIVE: WE CERTAINLY AS A COMPANY ARE INVOLVED IN NORTH CAROLINA AS WELL AS VIRGINIA, SO THERE IS NO NATURAL BARRIER FROM OUR STANDPOINT IN GOING OUT OF STATE. WE THINK THAT THIS IS THE DIRECTION THAT A TOURNAMENT THAT A TOURNAMENT LIKE THIS SHOULD GO.

And this morning out in the Sontag area of Franklin County, Paul Radford one of southwest Virginia's all-time stock and modified racing greats, bagged up a couple of trophies on opening day.
Radford retired from racing after winning the New River track championship in 1993.
