The weekend compromise ends the budget deadlock- at least for now.
The agreement remains in effect until December 15th and calls for the
President to agree to a balanced budget in seven years.
It uses numbers Republicans favor but also provides funding for medicare,
medicaid, education agriculture and the environment.

The furlough affected thousands of people here in Southwest Virginia. But is

The furlough had most of the Federal employees upset-- and now we see why.
When they came in this morning, they were hit with massive amounts of

And officials say it will take a while to get caught up.

California apartment building.
The four-seater Piper plane smashed into a building in a crowded suburb in

The aircraft was trying to land at a nearby airport, in heavy fog...the
plane went down just a half mile from the runway.
A Lynchburg man died this morning when his car ran off Route 460 east of

State police say 45- year- old Thomas Monroe Douglass was headed west on 460
around 6:15 when he lost control of his car.
The vehicle ran off the right side of the road, struck several bushes and
Douglass was pronounced dead at the scene.
Authorities say it did "not" appear he was wearing a seatbelt.

The woman accused of kidnapping an elderly man over the weekend isn't saying
much... only that she needs an attorney.
31- year- old Mitzi Horton was arraigned today in District Court.
She's charged with abducting Vernon (LOFF-in) Laughon by locking him up in
the trunk of his car.
The man was reported missing on Thursday.
Then Saturday, when police found his vehicle, Horton was in the driver's
She told officials Laughon let her use the car.
Police found the trunk key in Horton's pocket and that's when they
discovered the man locked away.
Laughon told police the last thing he remembered was being choked and then
waking up in the trunk.
Horton's preliminary hearing is scheduled for December 19th.
Police say an Illinois woman who wanted a pregnant woman's baby killed
her, cut open her womb and took the full term infant.
Two men were also charged in the killings in DuPage County, Illinois.
28 year old Jacqueline Annette Williams, her boyfriend and cousin are all
charged with shooting the 28 year pregnant woman and fatally stabbing her ten
year old daughter and eight year old son.

Police say Williams is a former nursing student who knew how to deliver a

A shooting spree left four people dead including an infant near
Police say this man, Jerry Hessler was fired from Bank One last year
because of alleged sexual harrassment charges.
He apparantly broke into one bank employee's house last night, killed
him, his wife and daughter.

The F-D-A has approved a new AIDS drug for marketing.
Three T-C is to be used in combination with A-Z-T.
The drugs are said to boost the immune systems of patients with H-I-V.
Three T-C is the first new initial treatment drug added to the anti-AIDS
arsenal since 1987.
Other drugs have been approved for use after A-Z-T fails.

Mixed reaction in health care field today to new Republican proposals for
Medicare and Medicaid.

Under the latest G-O-P revisions, the elderly would have strong incentives
to switch from Medicare to private health plans.
Under some of those plans, doctors could charge patients more than Medicare
Many doctors and insurance companies are said to be happy with the plans--
while hospitals are not, claiming they could lose up to 11-hundred dollars on
every Medicare patient they admit.
For the first time in 14 years, doctors' salaries are falling as more
patients enroll in managed care.
The American Medical Association says median earnings dropped
three-point-eight percent in 1995-- to 150-thousand dollars.
That compares to a four-percent increase in 1993.
The decline is apparently due largely to employers seeking lower insurance
premiums and insurers pressuring health care providers to cut costs.
Another survey found primary care doctors who receive more than half of
their income from managed care patients lost 15-percent of their earnings this

Two time Olympic gold-medalist Sergei Grinkov collapsed and died today on
