Police in Central Virginia have suspended their manhunt tonight.
They were searching for a man who allegedly robbed the Nationsbank on
Boonsboro Road in Lynchburg this afternoon.
Just before two p-m, a black male walked into the bank and demanded money.
Police say he did not brandish a weapon, and witnesses say the suspect fled
on foot towards old Boonsboro Road where another suspect and a getaway car
apparently were waiting for him.
The car was later recovered off Walnut Hollow Road in Bedford County...
police officers and scent dogs have spent the past two hours searching the area
for any sign of the man.
Police had to call off the search on account of darkness. No word yet if it
will contiue tomorrow.
A former Campbell County court clerk pled guilty today to eleven counts of
60- year- old Elizabeth C. Tucker was arrested last August after 28 years on
the job as a deputy clerk.
Tucker admits to embezzling more than four thousand dollars over a five year
period... the money came from marriage license and filing fees that were
usually paid in cash.
Special prosecutor David Grimes says Tucker stole the money to support her
habit of playing Bingo and the state lottery.
She'll be sentenced next year.
Police are still looking into the death of a Danville woman whose decomposed
body was discovered a month ago.
But without a cause of death, Danville police say they have little to go on.
26- year old Robin Annette Gatewood's skeletal remains were discovered
behind Motley's Warehouse October 28th.
Assistant Chief Medical Examiner David Oxley says he's been UNable to
determine a cause of death, because the body was too decomposed.
Oxley says there was evidence of drugs.
Danville police are hoping someone will come forward with information.
The battle for control of the hearts of Virginia Republicans took an ugly
turn today -- toward the heart of Governor George Allen.
Outgoing party chairman Pat McSweeney announced yesterday he would NOT seek

economically. State lawmakers will decide whether those benefits will outweigh

Contract talks between Bell Atlantic and its workers' union reached an
impasse two months ago.
Now the two sides are going to try to resume negotiations.
The president of the Communications Workers of America Local 22-0-4 says the
C-W-A and Bell Atlantic will meet next Monday to try to get the talks going.
The main issues in the contract dispute: wage increases, health benefits
for retirees, and job security.
The C-W-A represents more than 11 hundred Bell Atlantic workers in our area
Bell Atlantic is the only one of seven "Baby Bells" that has not reached a
new agreement with the C-W-A.
A dentist in Pulaski County has settled a lawsuit against a woman who
distributed a flier FALSELY claiming he had AIDS.
Gus Vlahos (vuh-LAW-hose) was suing Doris Sheppard for 10- million dollars.
The terms of the settlement are not being disclosed, with the exception of
Sheppard's public apology.
Sheppard stated in her apology that she found a document in her newspaper
box claiming Vlahos had tested H-I-V positive at Montgomery Regional Hospital.
She says she made copies and distributed them at her place of employment.
Sheppard apologized for any inconvenience or embarrassment her actions
caused the dentist.
Virginia's economy will grow in the next two years -- but much more slowly
than state officials had predicted.
Last week, the state released some scaled-back revenue forecasts.
Today, the Allen Administration put its spin on those numbers.

What's the message from the Governor's office?
The Governor is just three weeks away from unveiling the first full budget
of his administration -- for 1996 and '97 fiscal years.
And the message from Finance Secretary Paul Timmreck is that he's got some
"tough, tough" choices.

Virginia Tech's chances of receiving a bid to an alliance bowl will largely
depend on what happens to their Big East co-champion rivals..
Reports out of Miami earlier today said the Hurricanes administration was
going to hold the school out of a bowl this season.
The Hurricanes were charged with 10 NCAA rules violations last month, and the
hope was by pulling out of the bowl picture this year and taking their
punishment now; they would have a clean slate for next season.
But late this afternoon, the University president flat out denied those

Today, PGA of America has named Tom Kite the captain of the 1997 U.S.
Ryder Cup team.
