Two bank robberies in two days have Lynchburg police scrambling in their search for suspects.

The latest occurred just over an hour ago at the First Virginia Bank on Main Street, the second time in two weeks this branch has been robbed.
Two men entered the bank and demanded cash, apparently without displaying a weapon.
They fled on foot, but an eyewitness says a dyepack inserted with the money exploded just seconds later.

A jury has recommended that 33-year-old Frank Lee serve life in prison for killing Fran Smith.
Smith had taken Lee in to her home after his release from prison last January and wanted to help him get start a new life.

He apparently lost his footing on the ladder and plummeted 32 feet.
He was not breathing when emergency crews arrived.

The woman killed in a car accident in Martinsville this morning has been identified as 39-year-old Jeanette Weaver Rakes of Ridgeway.
Police say Rakes was travelling south on Memorial Boulevard when she ran off the road and struck a utility pole.
She was airlifted to Roanoke Memorial Hospital, where she died.
Police don't know what caused her to lose control of her car.

On October 6th at the intersection of routes 220 and 605, a tractor trailer carrying thousands of gallons of Toluene (TOL-yoo-EEN) overturned and burst into flames.
It forced dozens of Fork Mountain residents to evacuate their homes, and it took emergency crews more than three hours to extinguish the blaze.
45- year- old Norman Craig of Winston Salem, North Carolina was behind the wheel of rig.
This morning he was in Franklin County District Court, and found guilty of improper driving.
His punishment-- a fifty dollar fine plus court costs.

Authorities think the plane, piloted by 31-year-old Colin Cambell of Lynchburg, went down Tuesday night on a mountain in Webster County.
Cambell was returning to Lynchburg from Braxton County in HEAVY fog when flight controllers LOST contact with his plane.

60- year old Elizabeth C. Tucker yesterday pleaded guilty to stealing more than 45- hundred dollars over a five year period.
Authorities say Tucker would take cash payments for copying and filing fees and pocket the money without turning in a receipt.
Her attorney hopes the judge takes into account Tucker's age and lack of a criminal record when she's sentenced in January.

APCO says the lineman who sued the company a couple of weeks ago over the loss of his job was let go because of a drinking problem.
John Reardon claimed he checked into the Psych Center for depression, only to have his supervisor pay him a visit and ask for his resignation.
In its legal response APCO says a breathalizer test confirmed that Reardon was intoxicated on the job... operating a company vehicle while under the influence.

The Walnut Street Bridge over the Roanoke River must be replaced, and the demolition is scheduled to begin in mid- December.
More than six thousand cars use the bridge every day, and the project will re- route traffic onto route 116. A second detour will also provide access to neighborhoods and Mill Mountain.
Because the closure will send more traffic through residential areas, the city is promising strict enforcement of speed limits and parking restrictions.

The state Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control is considering selling liquor in supermarkets.
The A-B-C plans to test their new idea by opening a liquor store inside a supermarket in Norfolk.
A-B-C officials say that if the concept is a success, it will be used at other supermarkets and possibly discount-grocery stores.
