Two bank robberies in two days have Lynchburg police scrambling in their
search for suspects.
The latest occurred just over an hour ago at the First Virginia Bank on Main
Street, the second time in two weeks this branch has been robbed.
Two men entered the bank and demanded cash, apparently without displaying a
They fled on foot, but an eyewitness says a dyepack inserted with the money
exploded just seconds later.

Pickle says he picked up the money and returned it to the bank.
It is believed all of the money was recovered.
A grocery bag with red dye on it was found several blocks away and a police
tracking dog is trying to pick up a scent of the robbers in the area.

Meantime, police are still looking for a suspect in yesterday's bank
A man robbed the Nationsbank on Boonsboro Road and ran to a get-away car
parked across the street.
An hour later, police searched the area around a home off Walnut Hollow Road
in Bedford County.
A tip indicated the car may have been abandoned behind the house, but a
search turned up nothing.
Police are NOT releasing the name of the man who they believe is responsible.
A man who became prison pen-pals with a Hampton woman and later beat her to
death has been convicted of first-degree murder.
A jury has recommended that 33-year-old Frank Lee serve life in prison for
killing Fran Smith.
Smith had taken Lee in to her home after his release from prison last
January and wanted to help him get start a new life.
He bludgeoned her to death and was captured in Danville several days later.
Authorities now say the Hollywood photographer charged with killing model
Linda Sobek may be a serial killer.
Investigators are pursuing hundreds of leads and honing in on at least two
One of them has striking similiarities to Sobek's death.
Like Sobek, the remains of Kimberly Pandelois (pan-DEHL'-ee-ohs) were found
in the Angeles National Forest in 19-93.

Investigators are also looking into a homicide in Ohio, close to where
Rathbun's father lives and where Rathbun had often visited.
A Minnesota man will be in court today to plead guilty to a double murder
he says he committed 20 years ago.

Authorities say John Claypool has confessed to shooting Lake City Mayor
Wilmer Strickland and his wife when he was 14-years old.
Claypoool told authorities he had been drinking and smoking marijuana when

A Roanoke man is fighting for his life this morning after falling from a
Witnesses say Skid Wheller was weather-proofing the roof of a house on 11th
Street in Southeast Roanoke.
He apparently lost his footing on the ladder and plummeted 32 feet.
He was not breathing when emergency crews arrived.

Emergency crews were able to get him breathing again and took him to Roanoke

The woman killed in a car accident in Martinsville this morning has been
identified as 39-year-old Jeanette Weaver Rakes of Ridgeway.
Police say Rakes was travelling south on Memorial Boulevard when she ran off
the road and struck a utility pole.
She was airlifted to Roanoke Memorial Hospital, where she died.
Police don't know what caused her to lose control of her car.

Still no sign of a plane that may have crashed in central West Virginia.
Authorities think the plane, piloted by 31-year-old Colin Cambell of
Lynchburg, went down Tuesday night on a mountain in Webster County.
Cambell was returning to Lynchburg from Braxton County in HEAVY fog when
flight controllers LOST contact with his plane.

A Campbell County woman convicted of embezzling from the circuit court
clerk's office blames it on Bingo and the lottery.
60- year old Elizabeth C. Tucker yesterday pleaded guilty to stealing more
than 45- hundred dollars over a five year period.
Authorities say Tucker would take cash payments for copying and filing fees
and pocket the money without turning in a receipt.
Her attorney hopes the judge takes into account Tucker's age and lack of a
criminal record when she's sentenced in January.
APCO says the lineman who sued the company a couple of weeks ago over the
loss of his job was let go because of a drinking problem.
John Reardon claimed he checked into the Psych Center for depression, only
to have his supervisor pay him a visit and ask for his resignation.
In its legal response APCO says a breathalizer test confirmed that Reardon
was intoxicated on the job... operating a company vehicle while under the

Buying liquor in the grocery stores may someday be as easy as A-B-C,
and while this bridge is getting a face lift, motorists will have to find
another way to get around for the next year.

A Roanoke bridge that carries thousands of cars every day will be closed
for the next year.
The Walnut Street Bridge over the Roanoke River must be replaced, and the
demolition is scheduled to begin in mid- December.
More than six thousand cars use the bridge every day, and the project will
re- route traffic onto route 116. A second detour will also provide access to
neighborhoods and Mill Mountain.
Because the closure will send more traffic through residential areas, the
city is promising strict enforcement of speed limits and parking restrictions.
Getting to the liquor store may be a little easier in the future.
The state Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control is considering selling
liquor in supermarkets.
The A-B-C plans to test their new idea by opening a liquor store
inside a supermarket in Norfolk.
A-B-C officials say that if the concept is a success, it will be
used at other supermarkets and possibly discount-grocery stores.
People in our area will soon be shopping in the nation's largest drug store.
That's because Revco, a large chain here, has agreed to merge with rival
The combined company will have 45-hundred stores.
The deal will be a bitter pill to swallow for some Revco employees.
Rite Aid expects to eliminate 156-million-dollars of Revco's expenses.
Up to 11-hundred job cuts are planned.
Rite Aid will also close Revco's corporate headquarters.
There's no word yet on how the merger will affect Revco's operations here.
For years economic developers have complained they're running out of
marketable land in Roanoke.
Well yesterday the city learned it'll get some help.
Governor Allen has given a thousand-acre portion of northeast Roanoke an
enterprise zone designation.
It gives tax breaks and subsidies to anyone trying to improve potential
