Wanda Kirkman put her son down for a nap shortly before the fire started.
She and her husband, Colvin, were repairing a fence in a nearby pasture.
By the time they returned to the house it was fully engulfed in flames.
Their attempts to rescue Ethan failed.
His body was sent to Roanoke for an autopsy, but investigators believe he died from smoke inhalation.
No one else was seriously hurt in the blaze.
Patricia Kirkman is in The Southern Virginia Mental Institution.

It took a Lynchburg jury just 30 minutes to find a teen guilty of taking part in the 1993 arson at E-C Glass High School.

17 year old Elmo Jason Wilkerson was the last of four teens to stand trial for the crime.
Wilkerson was convicted of burglary and damaging a public building- for his role in the blaze that left nearly a million dollars in damage.
Judge Richard Miller remanded Wilkerson to the Department of Youth and Family Services for an undetermined amount of time.
He could be held until he's 21.

Jean, after months of planning, the Goode Rescue Squad is finally able to start responding to emergency calls.

The squad's formation was marked by bitter disputes with nearby rescue crews, which felt the Goode volunteers lacked the equipment and the manpower to set out on their own.
But now Goode has an ambulance, and about two dozen members with a commitment to serve their community.
