This was the day when family members had their day in court...a chance to
stand up on behalf of the three servicemen...
The wife of Marine PFC Rodrico Harp told the court - quote - I'm very sorry.
I'd like to apologize to the Japanese girl, to her mother and father, to the
people of Japan and the United States.
Harp buried his face in his hands and appeared to be crying as his wife said
he adored his two daughters and was a gentle man.
The case is being heard before three judges...there are no jury trials in
Japan.
And to the Japanese, an apology shows remorse and can often lead to a
reduced jail sentence.
The families of the three men originally claimed the men had been railroaded
into giving confessions...one pleading guilty to the rape, the other two
admitting to the abduction.
Now, after their visit to Okinawa, the families say that was a
misunderstanding and in fact have offered to pay the family of the 12-year-old
Japanese girl 15-thousand dollars as a gesture of apology for the three - a
traditional Japanese custom.
But despite all that...the case continues to be a lightening rod for
opponents of the US presence in Okinawa...and is clearly forcing Japanese and
US officials into thinking of ways to trim the size of the bases - and ways to
move some of these troops somewhere else in Japan.
