Unless the two sides approve a stop gap spending measure, the government
could shut down after midnight.
The most affected Federal Agency here in Southwest Virginia seems to be the

A North Carolina trucker is going to prison for life for murdering two women
in Tennessee including one whose body was found in southwest Virginia.
Sean (Seen) Goble (Go-bull) also faces charges of killing a woman in North
Carolina and is suspected in a string of slayings across the South and Midwest.
The 29- year- old man was sentenced to two consecutive life terms.
The murders occurred in Greene and Jefferson counties in Tennessee.

Officials say a tow mower inadvertanly punctured one of the gas lines.
The hole was plugged in a matter of minutes and the non- affected employees
went back to work.
A one thousand dollar reward is being offered to anyone with information
about an arson at Bedford's Rubatex plant.
Police say someone set fire to stacks of rubber stored in a parking lot the
night of October 30th.
The blaze destroyed the rubber products and heavily damaged a house next
Rubatex is offering the reward for information that leads to the arrest and
conviction of whoever was responsible.
Anyone with information about the crime can call Bedford Police at 586-7111.
Governor George Allen's new two- year budget proposal is getting a lukewarm
reception before it is even officially released.
Among the highlights, a one-time bonus next December for state workers and a
three- percent pay raise in December 1997.

The Administration has come up with a quarter-BILLION more dollars in
projected revenue over last month's predictions.
The nitty gritty of the budget will be revealed next week.
Some Lynchburg residents who don't want a multi million dollar sports
complex in their neighborhood are now trying to block the project.
Late Wednesday, seven neighbors filed suit against Lynchburg city council
which gave the complex the go- ahead last month.
Neighbors in the Sandusky area are worried that the complex.. which includes
a minor league baseball stadium.. would only create noise, light and traffic

Neighbors want a Lynchburg judge to block the city from issuing permits
related to the project- until their complaints can be heard.

More than 60 members of a Danville neighborhood gathered tonight to
celebrate the holiday season.
The Westmoreland Neighborhood Organization has been working together for two
years to make its community a better place to live.
Tonight the residents gathered for a candle light ceremony in honor of the
holiday as well as to remember neighbors who passed away this year.
The organization's original mission was to fight crime, but over the past
two years its evolved into much more.

One track note. Modified race car driver and Martinsville native Kenny
