In Virginia, juveniles can be tried as an adult when they're 14.
The governor's Committee on Juvenile Justice Reform would like to see all
juvenile defendants, 14 and older, who are charged with a violent crime be
automatically tried as adults.
Currently a judge makes that decision.
And many say it should stay that way.
Violent crimes made up three percent of juvenile arrests in 1993.
But at the same time a study done by the Department Of Criminal Justice
found that half of the juveniles convicted of violent crimes WERE NOT sentenced
to any time behind bars.
Attorney General Jim Gilmore says that's a reason for reform.
