House Speaker Newt Gingrich and Senate Majority Leader Bob Dole are at the
White House to talk with President Clinton.
It is the latest attempt to hammer out a balanced budget.
Shortly before they arrived, Clinton vetoed a spending bill for the
departments of State, Justice and Commerce.

In suburban Detroit, two people are dead following a shooting at a Chrysler
Police say an employee walked into the Sterling Heights plant at about 6:30
this morning- shot a woman to death, then killed himself.
Company officials say an apparent relationship went sour.
The two worked within a few feet of each other on the assembly line.

After the shooting, Chrysler sent 700 assembly line workers home for the day
and offered on-site counseling.
North Carolina authorities say they've arrested a man wanted on bank robbery
charges in Lynchburg.
19 year old Brian Keith Watson was apprehended this morning as he allegedly
tried to break into a motel in Rowland (ROE-land), North Carolina.
Watson is also charged with possession of a stolen vehicle.
A quick background check on Watson revealed he was wanted for allegedly
robbing the Nationsbank on Boonsboro Road November 29th.
Police found his car in Bedford County, but Watson escaped and has been on
the run for three weeks.
Two Lynchburg detectives are traveling to Rowland to talk to Watson before
he makes his first court appearance tomorrow morning.
New York City is expecting its first White Christmas in a dozen years-
Residents there are bracing for at least a foot of the white stuff by
tomorrow morning-- and it will probably stick around for several days.
The Midwest has already been pummeled by snow, sleet and in Chicago-- wind.

83- year- old Vernon Laughon (LAWN) testified he was choked by 31 year old

Gardner expects Horton to be indicted in February.
A second group of jurors is hearing the case against a Halifax County teen
accused in a fatal drive by shooting.
Kevin Chase Newman's first trial in October ended in a hung jury.
The 17 year old is accused of killing Anthony Scott Whitlock during a drive-
by shooting in February at The Westside trailer court.
Prosecutors say Newman was in the car and pulled the trigger.
In September, Harry Traynham (TRAY-NUM) was convicted of first degree murder
for his role in the crime.
A jury believed he was responsible for driving the car.
Defeated Republican state Senator Brandon Bell of Roanoke is in the running
for a spot on the Alcoholic Beverage Control Board.
Bell says he hasn't decided if he wants the full- time, paid position.
He'd have to move to Richmond -- or face a long commute.
The job pays about 60- thousand dollars annually to regulate the alcoholic
beverage industry in Virginia.
The Governor has three seats on the ABC board and five on the Parole Board-
They are the only paid patronage jobs outside of his own Cabinet that he
The Allen Administration says Bell is one of many people being considered
for the current opening -- and that his name was recommended by people in the

Hafir's uncle is suing an Austin, Texas hospital for unsanitary practices.
He had a benign tumor removed, and after surgery, developed a massive
bacterial infection-- which caused a stroke, and left him paralyzed.

are preventable in the first place.
The solution is simple-- handwashing.
Still, studies show as many as 70-percent of doctors and nurses don't

rapid motion for 10 to 15 seconds.

A new test will enable patients to know within hours-- rather than days--
if they have tuberculosis.
The F-D-A has approved the use of the Mycobacterium Tuberculosis Direct
Test to detect T-B.
The test is more than 95-percent accurate-- and since results come within
five hours, patients can start treatment earlier.
About ten million Americans are infected with T-B and about ten-percent
will develop an active case of the disease.
Montgomery Regional Hospital hopes to make labor a little easier with its
new birthing center.
Patients will be admitted through a separate entrance for convenience and
The center includes five new labor, delivery, recovery and post-partum
The rooms are equipped with all the comforts of home, even whirlpool baths
for early labor.
And the state-of-the-art facility incorporates some new technology, such as
central fetal monitoring at the nurses station.
The hospital hopes to begin delivering babies in the center this week.
