A guilty verdict tonight for Raymond Mahoney.
After deliberating for three hours, a jury found the Roanoke man guilty of
first degree murder and arson.
The jury recommended a 30- year sentence for Mahoney.
He was convicted in the death of 40- year old Brenda Ann Davis--
She died in a house fire in May.
Prosecutors say it was a circumstantial case.
But the evidence placed Mahoney on Washington Avenue at the time of the

But the case is not settled for the defense-- which would not comment on
the verdict, saying it's still an active case.
Mahoney is scheduled for sentencing January 30th.
State Police say a Pearisburg woman wasn't wearing a seatbelt when she
wrecked her pickup truck this afternoon.
The accident killed the woman- 27 year old Victoria Michelle Johnson.
The crash happened on Route 460 near the Town of Narrows.
State Police say Johnson was driving West on 460 when she ran off the
right side of the road, crossed back to the left, struck a guardrail and went
over an embankment.
Johnson died a few hours later at the hospital.
Some Bath County parents say they're outraged at two books used in school.
They say the books are indecent and they want them out.
But other parents say that violates the principles of freedom of speech.

A jury has convicted the second and final defendant in a Halifax County
drive by shooting case.
17- year old Kevin Chase Newman was found guilty this afternoon of second
degree murder and two counts of attempted murder.
The jury recommended Newman spend 79- years in prison.
He was accused of pulling the trigger in a drive by shooting in February
that killed Anthony Scott Whitlock.
Harry Antoine Traynham (TRAIN-UM) was convicted of first degree murder in
September after a jury held him responsible for driving the car.

A Roanoke school bus driver indicted on federal drug charges faces more
charges in state court, including failure to stop for a school bus.
Wayne Anthony Hicks pled not guilty to the federal charges this afternoon
as he was arraigned.
He is accused of possessing 38 grams of crack cocaine.
The 23 year old man faces a minimum sentence of five years if convicted.
Hicks faces unrelated charges from an arrest in May including passing a
stopped school bus, failure to stop for police, and attempted escape.
The Roanoke man accused of setting up an elaborate indoor marijuana farm
admitted his guilt in federal court.
Victor Layman could face up to 40 years when he's sentenced in the spring.

The judge ignored the sentencing guidelines and ordered Sherman Ace Cable to
serve 90 days behind bars. He'll have to report to the county jail January
Moore's Lumber and Building Supplies will cut 26 jobs at its Roanoke
distribution center- during the next five months.
The chain says it's doing this because it hired the Frederick Trading
Company of Maryland to distribute what it calls "hard line" products, such as
hardware, hand tools, and power tools.
Moore's Roanoke warehouse will concentrate on distributing lumber and
structural building materials.
Some of the people losing their jobs will be offered positions at Moore's
retail locations and the Frederick Trading Company's Roanoke site.

beat Blacksburg 60 to 49, but Chris Childress reached a milestone.

VMI running back Thomas Haskins has been selected to two All-American

Last night the Associated Press selected Haskins to the first team! The
Football Gazette named him to the second team. The Junior rushed for a VMI
school record 1 thousand, 548 yards this season and scored 17 touchdowns, also
a school record. He was the Southern Conference offensive player of the year.
Roanoke College will host the fourth annual Dominos-Lewis Gale basketball
tournament January 3rd and 4th.
Aside from the great division three action, one of the best highlights is
the NBA and college memrobilia that is raffled off during the course of the 2
day tourney. Proceeds go cancer research and the V-Foundation.

The Sun newspaper reports that Queen Elizabeth wrote letters to her son and
