Some late Christmas flurries are causing havoc for travelers on Interstate
81 this evening.
State police say icy conditions have forced more than a half dozen cars off
the road in northern Roanoke County.
Two people were injured in this two- car crash near the 146 exit.
Both northbound lanes of I- 81 were blocked for almost an hour as crews
worked to clear the scene.
Traffic is still moving slowly at this hour.
Authorities say anyone travelling in the area should use caution in areas
where drifting snow has frozen to the roadway.
Another Lynchburg landmark has been destroyed by fire.
Three months after a century- old railroad terminal burned to the ground,
the Lynchburg waterfront has suffered another historic loss.

Authorities don't believe anyone was inside either building when they caught

For downtown Lynchburg, it was another historic building lost to fire.
Earlier this year, an artists' group expressed interest in renovating the
Lukens structure, creating lofts and shops out of the empty space.
Those plans fell through, but a number of spaces had recently been leased to
...tenants who spent Christmas Day watching their building disappear.

It's hardly a white Christmas for U.S. troops in Bosnia.
Rather, soldiers in Tuzla spent the day sloshing through muck, setting up
equipment in a cold rain.

The Pope halted his Christmas greetings from the Vatican, saying he

Meantime in Moscow, Russians spent Christmas Eve shopping.
Although the Russian Orthodox Christmas falls on January 7th, the date most
Western Christians celebrate-- December 25th-- is beginning to mean more there.
Just a few years ago, church services were illegal.
Now, they're common.
But it isn't just a spiritual awakening underway-- the capitalist trappings
of every child's favorite holiday are also evident.
A Rockbridge County woman remains in critical condition following a multiple
shooting that killed her boyfriend.
Brenda Tomlin was taken to the University of Virginia Hospital following the
shooting around 3:30 yesterday morning.
24-year-old Christopher Wayne Higgins died when he was shot in his families'
home in Raphine.
The Sheriff's Department says 26-year-old Ronald C. Hewitt, Junior, is in
custody and charged with murder.
Witnesses say Hewitt entered the home with a rifle and shot Higgins and
Tomlin in their bedroom.
Hewitt was later arrested in Waynesboro.
Family members say Hewitt is Tomlin's former boyfriend.

Some areas of southwestern Virginia are getting some wintry precipitation
Christmas snowfall amounts have ranged from just a trace to four inches in
some of the higher elevations.
The snow showers will likely continue tonight-- before tapering off to
flurries in the morning.

Hollywood is mourning the loss of one of the great entertainers.
Dean Martin passed away today at the age of 78.
Martin died of acute respiratory failure at his Beverly Hills home-- his
colleagues say he had been in ill health for some time.

news that his longtime friend and partner has died.

Martin was also a successful actor and variety performer.

membership into the famed Hollywood Rat pack-- led by Frank Sinatra.
Martin worked Las Vegas for years, but in the 1980's he was seen less and
In 1988-- during a well-publicized tour with Sinatra and Sammy Davis
Junior, Martin suddenly dropped out-- reportedly because of poor health.

One woman is hospitalized following a three car accident this afternoon in

Police say it appears one of the cars failed to stop at a stop sign, was
struck broadside and pushed into a another vehicle.
This woman was trapped inside her car and had to be cut out by the fire
She was taken to Roanoke Memorial Hospital.

Police are still investigating.
Roanoke's Drug Court program is the first of it's kind in the state.
It puts non-violent drug offenders in a treatment program instead of jail.
The program is expanding in January.

There's more to the city's drug court program than coming before Judge Diane
((THEY ARE REQUIRED TO FIND EMPLOYMENT OR RETURN TO SCHOOL IF THEY WISH TO STAY
IN THE PROGRAM. WE HAVE SUPPLEMENTAL CLASSES, PARENTING CLASSES, ANGER CONTROL
Besides the programs the judge mentioned, drug court participants must meet
with counselors and probation officers at the Day Reporting Center.
Participants are also drug tested--in some cases several times a week.
Infractions such as positive drug tests, missed meetings or curfew
violations are punished.
Participants are sentenced to community service or in more serious cases
Only non-violent offenders are allowed in drug court.
The accused has to plead guilty to get into the program.
Then the prosecutor's office determines if the defendant is eligible.
There are about 80 of these programs in the nation.
The oldest is only five years old.
These programs have helped lower the rate of repeat offenders.
And Roanoke officials are hoping for the same results.

The new year will also bring about some changes at the center.
The offices will be renovated so most of their services can be housed under
Roanoke's drug court program is only four months old and officials say it's
off to a good start.
But they also say it will take years of follow up studies on participants to
know if the program is truly a success.

The Aloha Bowl will not be Glen Mason's final game as head coach of 11-th
John Shafer, The Senior Associated athletic director at Georgia, confirmed
today that Mason has changed his mind about becoming the Bulldogs head coach.
Mason accepted the Georgia job last week to succeed Ray goff who was fired
after seven seasons.
The 45 year old coach turned the Jayhawk program into a national power. In
8 seasons his record is 42-47 and 1.
But this year Kansas ended the regular season with a 9 and 2 record and a
trip to Aloha Bowl.
Georgia will now turn to Marshall head coach Jim Donnan. A news
conference has been called for tomorrow and Donnan will be there.
With Mason remaining in Kansas the Jayhawks decided to give him a nice
Christmas present a 51 to 30 win over U-C-L-A in the Aloha Bowl.

The State's top high school football prospect, Thomas Jones, May announce

The holiday season is full of college and high school basketball teams in
the Valley this year.
The First round of the NationsBank Holiday Hoops Classic begins at the Salem
Civic Center tomorrow with some good match ups.
Patrick Henry and William Byrd tip it off at two tomorrow afternoon and
Riverside of Durham North Carolina will take on Franklin County at about 3:45.
At six oclock the Colonels of William Fleming will take on Northside and the
night cap at 7:45 has Glenvar taking on Salem.
A couple of days after the New Year the Domino's Lewis Gale Classic will
be held at the Bast Center in Salem.
The tournament hosted by Roanoke College is a fund raiser for the Jimmy V
Foundation and the American Cancer Society.
Items like a hat autographed by Detroit Piston Grant Hill and the size 17
Nike shoes used by Alonzo Mourning in the playoffs last year will be raffled.
And a big goal has been set for this years event.
