State police say 59- year- old Rupert Guy Marshall was trying to move his tractor trailer into the right lane.
According to witnesses, Marshall tried to swerve back left to avoid hitting an Oldsmobile.
The truck jackknifed, it's trailer rear-ended the car, and both vehicles lost control and ran off the road.
Marshall was thrown from his rig and died at the scene.
The victims in the car are in stable condition.

Workers at Babcock and Wilcox in Campbell County got some bad news in September.
The defense contractor announced it would have to eliminate 200 jobs due to federal budget cuts.
Two of the area's largest employers, Norfolk Southern and the Radford Arsenal, made buyout offers to hundreds of workers.
Sara Lee delivered a shocker to its 130 employees in Salem this fall, when it decided to close its Leggs distribution center.
Most people in Roanoke weren't surprised at all though, when the city learned it would lose Heironimus, its last downtown department store.
The fall also featured two sets of layoffs at the Volvo-GM truck plant in Dublin due to slowing demand.
The moves put more than 350 people out of work.
The routing of a new interstate called I-73 was given the president's stamp of approval.
When it's built, it will pass through the New River Valley, the Roanoke Valley, and the Martinsville area.
Hayes, Seay, Mattern and Mattern won the second largest contract in its history.
The Roanoke firm will design part of a communications system for six Florida law enforcement agencies.
Roanoke and Martinsville received enterprise zone designations from the state.
It gives them valuable tax breaks and subsidies to improve business sites.
And throughout the latter part of the year Bell Atlantic remained in the headlines, from news about a contract dispute with its unions to merger speculation.

In Nevada -- two men have been arrested, accused of planting a powerful bomb at the Internal Revenue Service building in Reno.

The arrests were announced yesterday by the FBI.
52- year- old Ellis Hurst and 40- year- old Joseph Bailie were arrested as a result of a joint investigation by federal and local law enforcement.
The 100- pound bomb was found December 18th in a parking lot by a government employee arriving for work.
It reportedly was packed with ammonium nitrate and fuel, the same type of ingredients used in the Oklahoma City bombing.

A state inmate wants 50-thousand dollars and a circumcision after a prison doctor REFUSED to order the operation.
In a lawsuit filed yesterday in federal court in Roanoke, Hubert Leverich charges he suffers from INFECTIONS and PAIN because he is uncircumcised.
According to the lawsuit, a prison doctor told Leverich circumcision is considered ELECTIVE surgery that he's ineligible for while in prison.
Leverich filed a grievance through the prison that was denied.

The holiday season is just about over, and at the Rockbridge County Courthouse, they've taken down the festive red toothbrushes that outlined the edges of the courthouse lawn.

Despite nationwide publicity, no one has been able to explain the significance of the 53 toothbrushes.
They appeared just before Christmas. The courthouse left the toothbrushes in the ground for a week as a sort of holiday observance.
On Tuesday, they were pulled up.
The courthouse is saving them, and might put them out again next year.
