(( The O- J simpson verdict, Colin Powell deciding not to seek the
Presidency, and the decision to send American troops to Bosnia.
These are just some of stories the nation will remember.
But there are many memories that hit very close to home.
So let's take a look at Central and Southwest Virginia's top 10 stories of
1995.
Number 10 tells a story of a
community's strength and perseverance.
Corrections Corporation of America planned to build a medium security prison
near Wytheville.
The county board of supervisors originally approved the 15- hundred bed
facility... even though thousands of residents were outraged.

RUNS=:05
OUT Q=let the people vote on it
Residents took their frustration to Richmond, and then to the polls.
Voters ousted two board members who supported the private facility.
And a new supervisor's vote shot down construction of any type of prison.
The ninth biggest story takes us to Blacksburg, where Virginia Tech sports
ruled.
For the first time in 22 years, the men's basketball team captured the
N- I- T championship.
Meanwhile on the gridiron, Tech shook off two early season losses and plowed
through the rest of its schedule.
The Hokies wound up co- champs of the Big East and earned a bid to the Sugar
Bowl.
Number eight focuses on the dividing line between men and women.
Early in 1995, the Federal Appeals Court allowed V- M- I to continue its
exclusion of women.
That paved the way for the Women's Institute for Leadership program at Mary
Baldwin College.
Both schools said they were pleased with the decision-- but the Justice
Department was not... calling the move "separate but equal discrimination."
Even still, 42 women made history this fall as they became the first cadets
in the V- WIL program.
Police call number seven a senseless tragedy.
On the night of December 5th, Virginia Tech student Alexander DeFilippis was
found dead, with a gunshot wound to the head.

Authorities say Mark Lilly, his brother Ben Lilly, and Gary Wayne Barker
carjacked and killed the student during a two- county crime spree.
Each suspect faces 12 felonies, including abduction, robbery and murder.
The sixth biggest news maker of 1995 comes in the form of fire.
Maybe the greatest loss was felt in the Gainsboro district, when two
juveniles set fire to the Old First Baptist Church.
About a week before that blaze 750 fire- fighters were battling flames in
the mountains of Craig County.
Nearly 5- thousand acres of national forest were blackened.
Something old becomes something new for our fifth biggest story.
The forty- million- dollar face lift on the Grand Old Lady was finally
completed, and folks lined up to see how she had changed.
The addition of a conference center, and extensive remodeling of guest rooms
highlight the new Hotel Roanoke.
But with all the changes there were still many things left alone or
restored.
And of course the recipes for spoon bread and peanut soup were untouched.
Our 4th biggest story is hardly a thing of beauty for Andrea Ballengee.
On July 1st she was crowned Miss Virginia-- but three weeks later, she was
stripped of her title.
Pageant organizers said she lied about her academic record-- claiming to be
a member of Phi Beta Kappa and a first a year law student at the University of
Miami.
The controversy opened the door for runner- up Amber Medlin.

damn.
Two lives were claimed there-- one of them a rescue worker.

of the year.

Southwest home.
