Good Evening this is NEWS-7 at FIVE, I'm Jean Jadhon.
Federal workers are keeping their fingers crossed- because they could
get some money soon.
The house today overwhelmingly approved a plan to recall 280 thousand
workers and PAY all federal employees.
The plan now goes on to the Senate.
Regina Blakely is following the story and joins us live from Washington.

((After an all night session of negotiations with house republicans.. and 21
days off the job for federal workers.. the house agreed to send employees back
to work with pay... until January 26th.
And while national parks and passport offices will open.. and veteran's
benefits and meals on wheels will be protected.. many other federal employees
will have little to do.. with no funding for a number of programs.
REP. DICK GEPHARDT/D- MISSOURI: WE NOW HAVE BEFORE US A MEASURE WHICH MAKES NO

THEM TO DO NOTHING?
In the second part of the deal.. the GOP agrees to completely re-open
government through January 26th but only if President Clinton submits a seven
year balanced budget plan... as they contend he promised to do under a deal
reached to end the previous shutdown.

A temporary spending measure is just that-- temporary.
And they want assurance that another Federal shutdown is not in the offing.
