The Repbulican plan would send furloughed employees back to work through January 26th.

The Interfax news agency says Foreign Minister Andrei Kozyrev has submitted his resignation to President Boris Yeltsin.
Kozyrev has been Yeltsin's longest-serving minister.
He was elected to parliament in December.
Under Russian law, he can not serve in both government and parliament.

A Portland man has been charged with attempted murder, assault and kidnapping after shooting two people and taking several hostages at his former place of employment.

Police say the gunman, 24- year old James Rincker, had been fired from his job as a deliveryman at a company located in the 30-story building where the standoff erupted.
Yesterday, he allegedly went to seek revenge against two women at the office who had him fired.
Police say Rincker shot and wounded two men in a parking garage, and then took four bystanders hostage for several hours before surrendering.

Correll's attorneys argued he was borderline retarded, but authorities in Roanoke and Franklin County say he was acting out of hate when he beat a man he believed was homosexual.

Police say Kyle Helton was waiting for his school bus yesterday morning along route 57 when he ran in front of a car.
He suffered head trauma, a broken leg and possible internal injuries.
Helton was airlifted to a Roanoke hospital but doctors could not save him.
Authorities do not expect to file any charges against the driver, 57- year old Pauline Woodall of Axton.

That was proven out earlier this week at a Las Vegas convenience store.
A store surveillance camera caught this scene in which an armed robber entered the store and demanded money.
While the clerk was busy emptying the register, the robber apparently decided to fatten his payday and empty the pockets of a customer in the store.
Big mistake.
When the suspect put down his shotgun, the quick thinking clerk grabbed the weapon.
Suddenly the tables were turned.
Police say no shots were fired during the incident and they are still looking for the suspect.

The use of fax machines, pagers, cellular phones, modems and other telecommunications devices has increased the demand for numbers.
Southwest Virginia recently changed its area code for the same reason.
