Good Evening.
This is News 7 at 6.
I'm Ron Jones.
The winter weather blanketing the state has prompted Governor George Allen to declare A state of emergency in the Commonwealth.
The governor implemented the state emergency operations plan because significant snowfall is expected for the entire state.
The Virginia National Guard is on standby.
The Department of Transportation, State Police and the Department of Emergency Services have been monitoring the storm for days.
In our viewing area we are expecting anywhere from 10 inches to three feet.
DOUBLE BOXES=Ron/Denise/Microwave

Denise Allen has been making her way through the snow all day.
Denise, what are the conditions out there?
Ron, the snow started falling earlier than expected this morning.

And it's been falling steadily ever since.
There have been no major accidents but the roads are slick.
So far the department of transportation has been able to stay ahead in the game. Roll cue: stay ahead in the game

(( If winter precipitation is in the forecast V-DOT officials would rather see snow than ice.
So far crews have been able to keep the main roads passable. ((LAURA BULLOCK/V-DOT: WE ARE AT FULL CREWS IN MOST OF OUR LOCATIONS IN OUR 12 COUNTY AREA. PEOPLE ARE AVAILABLE TO WORK THROUGHOUT THE NIGHT AS NEEDED.))
V-DOT officials are also preparing for tomorrow.
Weather forecasters are predicting more snow and high winds. ((ONE OF THE THINGS WE ARE DOING IS PREPARING OUR SNOW BLOWERS. WE HAVE SEVEN SNOW BLOWERS THAT ARE AVAILABLE THROUGHOUT OUR AREA TO GO TO STRATEGIC LOCATIONS IF WE NEED TO REMOVE A LOT OF SNOW.))
Shoppers hit the stores early for winter needs, such as snow shovels, rock salt and of course sleds. ((JOE VAUGHN: I HAD TO GO OUT FOR THE SLEDS. THE KIDS WERE YELLING FOR SLEDS SINCE LAST NIGHT. I THOUGHT I'D GET OUT EARLY AND FIND SOME.)) ((CHAD WHEELING/AUTO ZONE: LOTS AND LOTS OF TIRE CHAINS, DE-ICERS, SCRAPERS AND YOUR USUAL CAR PARTS.)) ((DOUG BASHAM/BRAMBLETON HARDWARE: LOOKS LIKE THE WEATHER PEOPLE ARE GOING TO BE ON TARGET THIS TIME AND THEY'RE PREPARING FOR IT BETTER THIS TIME, NOT AS MUCH PANIC AS IT MIGHT HAVE BEEN IF IT WAS A WORK DAY.))
In just two hours Auto Zone did 16-hundred dollars worth of business--most of that was tire chain sales.
It seems bad weather is big business. ((WHEELING: I WISH WE COULD BE LIKE THIS EVERYDAY. I'M NOT SURE WHAT THEY'RE CALLING FOR ON SNOW, BUT IT SOUNDS LIKE THEY'RE CALLING FOR A LOT.))))

(Q/A: Denise do you have any winter weather tips for tonight?)

Of course don't go out if you don't have to and remember to check your elderly friends.
Also Laura Bullock suggests you move your cars off the streets.
This will help V-DOT crews when they go to clear the secondary roads.

US 4-60 from Bland County to Roanoke and westward is also battling the snow.

Rural roads are also blanketed by the white stuff.
In Blacksburg some skiers took advantage of the covered Sunset Boulevard.
During a heavy snow, roads with the most traffic, interstate and major routes, will receive top priority for snow removal.
Crews will begin working on less priority roads only after the high-priority roads are under control.
Statewide, V-DOT has more than 38-hundred employees ready to operate 35-hundred pieces of snow removal equipment.
