Hickey died from a rare blood infection caused by a bacteria called Neisseria Meningitides(nih SEAR ee uh men IN JI Ditties) which often causes meningitis.
The bacteria is actually so common an estimated five to 20 percent of the population carries the germ in the its throat.
The bacteria is airborne or spread by contact.
The incubation period for the disease is one to 10 days. ((ADELLE ZMARALY/ROANOKE CITY HEALTH DEPT.: THE SEVERITY OF ANY ILLNESS DEPENDS ON THREE FACTORS: ONE IS HOW MUCH OF A DOSE OF THAT GERM YOU GET, HOW DISEASE PRODUCING THAT GERM IS AND HOW SUSCEPTIBLE THAT PERSON MIGHT BE.))
Symptoms of meningitis vary, depending on the cause-- but may include:
--Fever,
--Headache
--Stiff neck & back
--Nausea
--Skin rash And Adelle Zmarly says it can even be prevented by good personal hygiene. For instance don't share drinks.
If you're ill wash your hands and of course a healthy lifestyle with proper diet and exercise.
The infection is treatable.
150 people at VMI have been given the antibiotic Rifampin to prevent the bacteria from taking any more lives.
