A day after Roanoke officials said they would not take legal action against
a Roanoke landlord, they have re-evaluated their decision.

Tonight, Joe Dashiell reports the commonwealth's attorney will decide if
the property owner should be cited for failing to install smoke detectors in
the home on Stewart Avenue.
Jean, with no history of complaints or inspections with this property,
building officials had said it wasn't their policy to cite the landlord.
but after a meeting that brought together a number of city officials this
morning, the case was referred to Roanoke Commonwealth's Attorney Don Caldwell.

President Clinton is apparently intrigued by the latest budget proposal
from House Speaker Newt Gingrich.
The two talked by phone today.
Gingrich is suggesting a child tax credit and a capital gains tax be
attached to a bill raising the debt ceiling.
Meanwhile one day after his State of the Union addresss, the President is
begining to look like a presidential candidate.

Floodwaters have shut down a popular tourist and recreation spot in Giles
County until further notice.
Most of the lower trail at the Cascades Recreation Area in the Jefferson
National Forest was damaged last week when Little Stoney Creek raged out of its
Two Foot-bridges were completely wiped out, and a third was damaged.
Officials say parts of the trail may be repaired, but much of it will have
to be REBUILT.
The work could take as much as 300 thousand dollars, but because of budget
cuts, there won't be nearly enough money to do it all this year.

In California, 35-year-old Sandra Jenson is recovering in the hospital
after receiving a heart-lung transplant.
The road to the surgery was a rocky one, as Jensen was originally turned
down for the transplant because she has Downs Syndrome.
The reason-- she was at first told she didn't have the intelligence to deal
with her own follow-up care.
Nationally and regionally, organ transplants represent a much larger problem
in modern medicine.
The question, mainly, is who gets them.

But in Roanoke, 55-year-old Irene Haley hasn't been so lucky.
In August, she was diagnosed with hepatitis-c, which also triggered
cirhossis of the liver.
Though doctors say she needs a transplant, she recently found out her
insurance won't cover the procedure.

But Irene Haley's family believes they aren't left with many alternatives,
if insurance won't cover the procedure.
It's an issue that has touched off a national ethics debate.
