Roanoke fire officials are calling a morning blaze suspicious.

About twenty fire- fighters put the flames out at 638 Marshall Avenue in Old
Southwest.
But not before an upstairs apartment was completely gutted.
No one was found inside, but a number of pets died in the fire.
Eight dogs and two cats were killed from smoke inhalation or burns.
District One Chief Bev Mitchell says the the cause hasn't been determined.
A number of fire- fighters at the scene think it started on a mattress--
even though no one was in the house.
Investigators have not yet talked to residents of the house or the
property owner.

A Roanoke man's been arrested tonight and charged with the arson of an
occupied dwelling.
Twenty year old Phillip Vincent Orren is charged with setting fire to a home
on 813 Patterson Avenue Tuesday night.
The fire caused heavy damage to the home.
Police are currently investigating a rash of fires in the southwest part of
Roanoke.
Eight empty buildings including two vacant homes and four garages have
burned in recent days.
Orren has not been charged in any of those fires.

of 69- year old Bill Maxey.
He was killed outside his Country Store early this morning in the community
of Alton.

A judge declared a mistrial tonight in the case of a prostitute who claimed
she was raped.
The jury was unable to reach a verdict in the case against Harry Lee
Thompson.
The woman admitted in court that she'd had sex with hundreds, maybe even
thousands of men, but she says on this particular night she was "off duty."
When first confronted with the rape and sodomy charges, Thompson told police
he didn't know anything about the woman.
He eventually admitted having paid for sex with her before and then insisted
it was with her consent on the occasion in question last June 18th.
Thompson could be tried again. And there's another rape charge still pending
against him.

capital as they were blasted by George Washington 64 to 47.

The mall has a number of tenants lined up for the vacant storefronts, many
