Mills Country store in Halifax county opens early every morning, but today
customers who were normally greeted by Bill Maxey walked away in disbelief.

Teresa Hamilton is in Halifax County at the store where Maxey was shot and
killed this morning.
Keith, Maxey was a popular man here in the community of Alton. Friends say he
was a hard worker who got up every day to open the country store.

Arson is suspected in a morning blaze in Old Southwest Roanoke.
When firefighters arrived at 638- Marshall Avenue, an upstairs apartment was
already engulfed in flames.
There were no PEOPLE injured... but a number of animals were trapped by the
Emergency crews were able to save two dogs, but ten other pets died from
either smoke inhalation or burns.
Some firefighters at the scene thought the blaze might have been set on a
mattress-- even though no one was found inside.
Investigators have yet to talk to the people who lived there, or to the
owner of the property.
A state policy change barring gay, lesbian, and unmarried couples from
getting low interest home loans may be challenged by the General Assembly.

Lieutenant Governor Beyer says if HE were governor, he'd go back to the
broader definition of family.
A General Assembly committee has passed up its chance this year to regulate
pornography on the Internet.
The House committee dealing with a Manassas delegate's cyber-porn bill has
"carried over" the legislation to a future Assembly session.
The bill would have required credit card companies and online servers to
warn customers about sexually explicit images easily found on the Internet.
Some lawmakers say such regulation is the job of the federal government.

their home was consumed by fire.

Joe Dashiell attended the service at Belmont Baptist Church, where friends
and strangers celebrated the lives of Christine Duncan and her four
Keith, the fire last saturday left a lasting mark on the neighborhood where
Christine Duncan lived with her grandchildren.
But today, their neighbors were remembering the good times.

A federal judge has dismissed the claims of a Virginia Tech Veterinary
School student who said she was "strip- searched" during a make-up test.
Tech dismissed Debbie Carboni because of her poor academic performance,
having failed three courses.
In today's decision, Judge James Turk concluded Vet school officials "acted
reasonably." When they suspected Carboni was cheating on the urology make-up
exam last April, they asked her to raise her blouse and drop her pants to prove
she didn't have study notes on her.
They did NOT find notes on HER, but some were found nearby.
As the judge pointed out, Carboni never refused or resisted being searched,
and he said "Carboni was wrong to have class notes with her in the exam room at
The defense says it was an accident, prosecutors call it murr.
That's what the jury will have to decide in the trial of Joe Gardner Bolling
in Bedford County.
Bolling pleaded not guilty today to the shooting death of his girlfriend,
27- year- old Torina (toe-REE-nuh) Lynn Wright last June.
Wright was shot in the buttocks during an argument in their Timber Ridge
She died of internal bleeding before she could reach a hospital.
The defense claims that before she died, Wright told a rescue squad worker
the shooting was an accident.

But medical examiner Dr. William Massello told the jury the gun had to have
been held at shoulder level to inflict the wound that killed Wright.

This afternoon, the victim's grandmother testified she heard Bolling
threaten to shoot Wright several weeks before the murder.
The trial is expected to last through Friday.
The capital murder conviction and death sentence of Doug Buchanan has been
upheld by a federal judge.
Nineteen at the time, Buchanan confessed to killing his father, stepmother
and two stepbrothers nine years ago. He claimed his wife, Christianne- -who's
two years older- -was the driving force behind the multiple murders.
The couple ran off to NEW Mexico immediately afterwards, but were
apprehended, extradited, tried and convicted in Amherst.
In an exhaustive review of the case, U-S District Judge James Turk rejected
each and every point of appeal in a 92-page opinion.
About 150 production jobs at one of the region's largest companies MAY be
going to Mexico.
Management at the G-E Drive Systems plant in Salem emphasizes that right now
this is only a proposal.
The company adds that increased work orders on the product lines that will
remain in Salem should prevent any layoffs.
G-E has more than two-thousand employees in Salem.
On Wall Street, stocks closed lower today.
The Dow lost about 26 points.
NASDAQ dropped seven points.
For the last decade the big retail draw in our area has been the Valley View
Mall in Roanoke.
It brings in shoppers from nearly 70 miles in any direction.
But by the next holiday season, some of the mall's longtime shoppers may
have trouble recognizing the place.

Monroe have purchased the entire racing operation formerly owned by A.G.

Compton, who is 28 years old says the team will move from Charlottesville to

sometime after midseason, and then run for rookie of the year honors in 1997.
Compton says getting the team in shape will keep him running more than a
handful of Late MOdel races this season at South Boston and New River Valley.
Compton says he acquired everything Dillard had including 9 cars, 11 engines
and a weightlifting equipment for a fitness room.
Michael Waltrip and the Wood Brothers are on top of the world these days
after turning in one of the speeds in preseason testing at Daytona.
Jeremy Mayfield turned in the fastest test speed, but Waltrip was fourth
fastest after a couple of the Heavy Chevys.

The Roanoke Express has had the last five days to prepare for this
weekend's battle with East Division leading Richmond this Friday
and then, Saturday, the team turns around and plays Hampton Roads.
