About twenty fire- fighters battled the blaze yesterday morning at 6-38 Marshall Avenue in Old Southwest.
But not before an upstairs apartment was completely gutted.
No one was found inside, but a number of pets died in the fire.
Eight dogs and two cats were killed from smoke inhalation or burns.
Fire investigators suspect the blaze started on a mattress-- even though no one was in the house.

Pendleton County schools are delayed two hours this morning.

A Roanoke man has been arrested for setting fire to a home at 8-13 Patterson Avenue Tuesday night.
Twenty- year- old Phillip Vincent Orren is charged with the arson of an occupied dwelling.
Police are investigating a rash of fires in the southwest part of Roanoke.
Eight empty buildings have burned in recent days.
Orren has not been charged in any of those fires.
