About twenty fire- fighters battled the blaze yesterday morning at 6-38 Marshall Avenue in Old Southwest.
But not before an upstairs apartment was completely gutted.
No one was found inside, but a number of pets died in the fire.
Eight dogs and two cats were killed from smoke inhalation or burns.
Fire investigators suspect the blaze started on a mattress-- even though no one was in the house.

Two West Virginia school districts face another day of delays because of last week's flooding.
Pendleton County schools are delayed two hours this morning.
And Greenbrier County, Greenbrier East High School, Roncerverte Elementary and Alderson elementary are closed today.
The rest of the county schools are delayed two hours.

Meantime, flooding has caused a serious water pumping problem in the town of Marlinton, West Virginia.
Residents on the town water system are being asked to conserve water.

A Roanoke man has been arrested for setting fire to a home at 8-13 Patterson Avenue Tuesday night.
Twenty- year- old Phillip Vincent Orren is charged with the arson of an occupied dwelling.
Police are investigating a rash of fires in the southwest part of Roanoke.
Eight empty buildings have burned in recent days.
Orren has not been charged in any of those fires.
