After nearly eight- years as a Congressman, L- F Payne says he's not seeking
Teresa Hamilton is in Danville where Payne made the official announcement
Jean, Payne may have closed the door on his career in Congress, but he's left
it cracked just enough to allow for other political possibilities.

ranking Democrats who are interested in Payne as a candidate for Lieutenant

Flames engulfed a house in Buchanan this morning.
The HOME was destroyed, but NO ONE was hurt.
Firefighters say they were called around nine after the clothes dryer caught
Flames quickly spread throughout the house from the back porch where the

Gene Moseley Junior lived in the house with his wife and three children.
Moseley said his landlord provided smoke detectors for the house and they

the shooting death of a Wythe County Sheriff's Deputy.

Prosecutors in Wythe County may now seek a murder indictment against the 16
year- old charged with killing sheriff's deputy Cliff Dicker.
Today a circuit judge upheld a lower- court ruling to transfer Christopher
Shawn Wheeler to adult court.
Wheeler was 15 when he allegedly shot Dicker in December of 1994.

His lawyer argued Wheeler belongs in the juvenile system, where he has a
chance at rehabilitation.
But Judge Colin Campbell said given the severity of the crime, and the fact
the juvenile system would have to release him at age 21, he should be tried as

Apparently a car pulled up to the sidewalk, two gunmen got out and shot
The gunmen then got back into the car and left.
Two victims are in critical condition- A third fled the scene and still
hasn't been found.
So far no one's been arrested.
Jury selection is underway in the trial of John Salvi- the man accused in
the abortion clinic shootings.
Salvi was brought to the courthouse under tight security and whisked in

Virginia's business and health care industries have opened both barrels on a
General Assembly bill called the "Patient Protection Act."
The bill would force H-M-O's and other managed care plans to let patients
choose their own doctors.
Ellen Qualls is in the state capitol newsroom.
What's the argument AGAINST such a bill?
Well, The Roanoke Regional Chamber of Commerce, Carilion, and a slew of
other big business and other health care interests say
letting doctor choice back into the picture defeats the purpose of managed care
-- which is to reduce costs for everyone.

Michael Volino (Voe-lee-no) missed a 35-yard field goal.
The kick was on the mark, but landed around the 2-yard line.
The "Million Dollar Kick" was sponsored by Hershey's.
It wasn't a total bust-- Volino not only got a free trip to Hawaii, he was
awarded ten thousand dollars for missing the kick.
Volino gained national attention for selecting the trip over taking the

Two Franklin County teens put their lives on the line this weekend, to save
an elderly neighbor.
