Our Heart-Score '96 reports continue-- educating about strokes-- or brain attacks.
The two biggest arteries that carry blood to the brain are the carotid arteries....there's one on either side of the neck.
About 25-percent of all strokes are caused when the carotid is blocked by plaque.
Now, the idea behind one procedure is to clean out the debris, before a stroke occurs.

It turned out Barbara Bonney had a mild stroke, and both her carotid arteries were almost completely blocked.

WHEN to perform the operation is still being debated.

Recent studies have confirmed the procedure does prevent strokes in both patients who have had a previous one, and those who are on their way to their first.
Another way to accomplish the same thing is now being tried-- balloon angioplasty, routinely used to open clogged arteries to prevent heart attacks is now being used to prevent strokes as well.
Balloon-tipped catheters are threaded into arteries in the head and neck, opening up the blockage.
The procedure may offer more options than surgery-- but only time will tell.

Now, it's fairly easy for your physician to tell if your carotid arteries are blocked-- blocked arteries make a different sound in a stethoscope.
