A million dollar cocaine drug ring that stretched from Virginia to Miami is
busted in Lexington.
Authorities say at least two of the alleged distributers were employees at
Washington and Lee.

(( Kurt Russ has been an Archeological Researcher at Washington and Lee since
1984.
He has supervised several digs throughout the county.
However, police say from 1990 to 1994 Russ worked with a maintenance worker
and an Alumnus in distributing cocaine throughout Rockbridge County.
Their main supplier, a drug dealer from Miami, was tricked by local
undercover officers to come to Lexington where he was arrested.

Police say Russ' job was to set up transactions with a drug dealer in Miami
and get the cocaine to the streets... and after fours years more than one
million dollars worth of cocaine made its way to Rockbridge County.
Eleven of 17- suspects accused in the drug ring have been arrested--the
other six are at large.

The suspect fled on foot into a nearby apartment complex, where tracking
dogs were unable to pick up his scent.

Three Danville police officers are named in a lawsuit that alleges police
brutality.

Sam Sakellaris supplied his attorney with these pictures allegedly taken the
night he was arrested.
He says it all happened when he was pulled over during a traffic stop two
years ago.
The suit says Officers L-M Adkins and L-R Kennedy beat Sakelleris while he
was handcuffed.
The suit also says Lieutenant J-C Lewis was standing by and encouraged it.
The attorney representing Sakellaris believes Sakellaris was targeted
because he was a witness to another case of alleged police brutality a number
of years ago.

According to the suit, Sakellaris was charged with assault and battery,
resisting arrest and disorderly conduct.
The charges were later dismissed.

A Campbell County teen is facing manslaughter charges for his part in a
fatal accident last month.

67- year- old Betty Blackburn Campbell died when her car was struck
broadside at the intersection of Wards Road and Harvard Street in Lynchburg.
Police say 19- year- old Andrew Lewis Viar ran a red light and crashed into
Campbell's vehicle.
Viar has been charged with involuntary manslaughter.
He was released on his own recognizance shortly after his arrest this week.

Judge James Turk said yesterday that the state did NOT violate the
constitutional rights of 41 sex offenders when it eliminated an experimental
program at Bland Correctional Center.
Inmates filed suit in March to force the state to continue the prison's Sex
Offender Treatment Community.
Administration officials say the program was cut to save nearly one
million dollars a year.
