(( The incident happened Sunday morning on Campbell Avenue around 3:30.
The driver 25-year-old William Hyden says the police pulled him over for a broken taillight and asked him if he'd been drinking.
He says during the stop police pulled Leftwich out of the passenger seat and questioned him.
He says that's when the beating began.
However, police say Leftwich resisted arrest and fought with the officers and bit one of them as they attempted to take him into custody.
We tried to speak with one of the officers but he refused. ((STEVEN LEFTWICH/DEFENDANT: WE'RE NOT TRYING TO CAUSE A LOT OF TROUBLE, WE JUST WANT JUSTICE SERVED. Roanoke police issued a news release this weekend about the incident. We attempted to get an on-camera comment today but were refused.
One question that remains unanswered by police--why was the car intially stopped?
The Mayor is now asking for an internal investigation and a state investigation.
Meanwhile Leftwich's trial on assault and resisting arrest charges is set for next month.
(Q&A/mel: Ron, what is the community's reaction to this?)
