The prime suspect in the death of a five-month old baby boy from Franklin
County is the child's own father.
Today 26- year- old Jerry Griffis had his bond revoked because he's wanted
in Florida for sexually abusing another child eight years ago.

Judge Julian Raney did just that, once he learned that Griffis had been
convicted on six sexual assault and battery charges in Gainesville.

Varney says Griffis has lived in Franklin County for three years, has been
married two years and that his wife is expecting another child.
A Lynchburg insurance agent has pled guilty in a complex scheme of banking
and investment fraud that netted him well over two million dollars.
Stephen Michael Phelps admitted everything, has cooperated fully with
The 51- year- old former agent for the Equitable Life Assurance Society
ripped off 11 clients- -including his in-laws, forged his wife's name on
fraudulent bank loan applications, set himself up in a lavish lifestyle.
Phelps managed to conceal his creative accounting for nearly a decade.
He's paid back a lot of the money. He'll be sentenced in federal court
A beauty queen's stay behind bars isn't over yet.
But today, a judge in Lewisburg gave Tracy Lippard a break.
The former Miss Williamsburg has served four months of a two- year sentence
for attempting to harm the family of her romantic rival.
Today, Judge Charles Lobban (LAH-buhn) rejected her motion for a new trial,
and he refused to release her while she appeals.
But he did agree to let her serve two one- year sentences concurrently.
That means she will become eligible for parole in April.

Supporters of a 37- million dollar bond issue in Roanoke County are firing
the first shots in their public campaign.
Today, the Roanoke County Education Association gave its endorsement to the
bond issue... urging a yes vote on the April 2nd referendum.
The teachers say a replacement for Cave Spring High School and improvements
at other schools are needed to maintain the quality of education in the county.

pushing the bond issue at several community meetings between now and the vote

The chairman of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission was in Lynchburg today,
touring the area's nuclear technology facilities.
Babcock and Wilcox's Naval Nuclear Fuels Division in Campbell County was
among the stops for Dr. Shirley Ann Jackson.

The U-S Justice Department has decided to intervene as a plaintiff in the
pending civil case against Virginia Tech and two football players.
The woman who is alleging she was raped by the players says going public with

Governor Allen took his turn on the national stage today.
No, he's not a vice- presidential candidate just yet.
But his name has been mentioned more than once.
The governor flew to New Hampshire this afternoon to voice his support for
