An alleged rape involving two Virginia Tech football players grabs the
attention of Washington.
Attorneys for Christy Brzonkala say the U-S Justice Department will intervene
as a plaintiff in the civil case against Tech, Tony Morrison, and James
Crawford.

A Martinsville teacher who allegedly sexually abused a former female student
had the opportunity to retire BEFORE the charge was ever presented to a grand
jury.
But prosecutors say 59- year old Anna Corbin did not follow through with the
arrangement.
Corbin has been a fifth grade teacher at Albert Harris Elementary school for
33- years.

The alleged victim, who's now 29, says the abuse began when she was eleven
and continued until she left for college.
Commonwealth's Attorney Randy Smith says he wanted to indict in November,
but held off until February.
He says Corbin's attorney asked that she be allowed to retire before

Smith says he was surprised to learn, Corbin in fact did NOT retire.
She was still employed as a teacher when the indictment was handed up this
week.

Some folks in rural sections of southwest Virginia haven't been able to
access the Internet yet because of high, long-distance connection charges.
But that will soon change.
The Citizens Telephone Cooperative in Floyd is now offering a flat rate
Internet connection service to a nine county area.
The service, called Citizens Internet, will be offered in Carroll, Craig,
Floyd, Franklin, Giles, Montgomery, Patrick, Pulaski, and Roanoke counties, as
well as most cities and towns in the area.

A Franklin County man will not be allowed to attend the funeral for his 5-
month old son, that's because Jerry Griffis is the prime suspect in the child's
death.
A judge yesterday denied his request to be released on bond.
The 26-year old convicted child molester skipped town in the middle of his
trial in Gainesville, Florida six years ago.

Phelps managed to conceal his creative accounting for nearly a decade.

Officials say at about about seven o'clock a water line at the Crystal
Springs pumping station broke, cutting off water to most of southeast and
southwest Roanoke.
Assessment is being done to determine the amount of damage and how long it
will take to fix the problem.
Jefferson Street from Reserve to Yellow Mountain Road is closed to traffic.
Roanoke residents are being asked to conserve water.
