More legal maneuvering in the civil case against Virginia Tech and two
football players a former student has accused of rape.
Tech's attorney filed a motion yesterday, saying that Christy Brzonkala has
no grounds for a discrimination suit against the university.
An attorney for one of the players, Tony Morrison, also filed a motion to
dismiss the lawsuit.
And attorneys for Brzonkala say the U-S Justice Department will intervene as

One of two Virginia Tech football students accused of raping Christy
Brzonkala answered to unrelated charges in a Blacksburg courtroom this morning.
Tony Morrison was charged with destroying property and stealing money from
the tip jar at a Blacksburg night spot last December.
Judge Thomas Frith dropped those charges because Morrison paid for the
He convicted the 20 year- old under the traffic code for public drunkenness,
and for possession of his brother's driver's license.

Jefferson Street between Flannagan Drive and McClanahan Street will remain

A Martinsville teacher charged with sexually abusing a former female student
apparently had the chance to retire before the charge was presented to a grand
jury, but did not take it.
59- year old Anna Corbin was a fifth grade teacher at Albert Harris
Elementary school for 33- years.
The alleged victim,
who's now 29, says the abuse began when she was eleven and continued until she
left for college.
Commonwealth's Attorney Randy Smith says he wanted to indict in November,
but held off until February.
He says Corbin's attorney asked that she be allowed to retire before
presenting the case.
Smith says he was surprised to learn, Corbin in fact did NOT retire.
She was still employed as a teacher when the indictment was handed up this

The 42- year- old man, who emerged from a seven-year coma this week, is said
to be doing well after undergoing life-saving surgery this morning to stave off
potentially deadly pneumonia.

People in rural sections of southwest Virginia have not been able to access
the Internet yet because of high, long-distance connection charges.
But that's about to change.
The Citizens Telephone Cooperative in Floyd is now offering a FLAT rate

Baltimore has a familiar face to coach it's new N-F-L team.
Owner Art Modell announced this morning that Ted Marchibroda
(mahr-chih-BROH'-dah) will be the teams new head coach.
The 64-year-old Marchibroda replaces Bill Belichick, who was fired
Marchibroda guided the Indianapolis Colts to the A-F-C championship game
against Pittsburgh last season before he resigned over a reported contract
