Authorities received the call about 4 this morning from a passerby who
noticed a man lying in the road on State Route 841.

Teresa Hamilton has been following the case and joins us now from our
Jean, investigators aren't releasing many details, but Sheriff Harold Plaster
says his department does have a suspect.

That wasn't the case early this morning in the community of Sandy River.
The normally peaceful area was disrupted by investigators working the
county's latest homicide.
One man was lying in the road, still alive.
He was taken to Danville Regional Medical Center.
Two others were found nearby in a car.
Investigators say the man and woman were apparently shot to death.

In Amherst, a man from Albemarle County is being held without bond in
connection with a fatal shooting at a trailer park last night.

Steve Smallshaw is in our Lynchburg newsroom. Steve, it's been a while
since the town of Amherst last had a murder.
Jean, Police say their last murder occurred nine years ago, in 1987...
While they have their murder suspect in custody, there are still some
unanswered questions about what happened last night.

((Police say they'd had problems in the town Court mobile home park
before, but it was never anything as serious as what happened Monday night.
Responding to a call of shots fired, authorities found a 22-year-old
Hispanic male lying on the ground.
He'd been shot several several times in the chest and was pronounced dead
at the scene.
The alleged gunman, 27 year-old Juan Jose Ochoa, returned to the scene an
half an hour later and was arrested without incident.
Police believe Ochoa and the victim had argued earlier that day.

Authorities still haven't released the victim's name, they are still trying
to reach his relatives in Mexico.
They say both men are migrant orchard workers, and the victim may have been
an illegal alien.

Meantime, Ochoa is being held without bond on murder and firearms charges,
he faces a preliminary hearing on March 19th.
Giles County authorities say the 14 year- old girl who was reported to have
jumped off a bridge Sunday is alive and safe.
Divers spent all day yesterday and Sunday evening searching the New River
for the girl's body.
Her friend had told authorities she jumped from Commissary Hill bridge.
Yesterday the friend changed her story, leading investigators to question
whether the teens had pulled a hoax.
Investigator Gary Price is not releasing the girl's name, or any other
details at this time.
Fire broke out at a Danville manufacturing plant filling part of the
building with black smoke and forcing evacuations this afternoon.
It happened around noon at the Intertape Polymer plant in Danville.
Crews from Ringgold and Danville responded.
Plant officials say a machine in the plant caught fire.

Plant officials say a chemical known as Toluene (TOL-U-LENE) was what
Fire officials say the chemical is considered hazardous, but plant officials
say the incident posed no threat to the community.

Smoke filled an American Airlines cockpit today- forcing 190 passengers to
The plane was preparing to takeoff for the Dominican Republic this morning.
It was headed to the taxiway when the pilot noticed smoke in the cockpit
and decided to evacuate as a precaution.
30 people were taken to the hospital with minor injuries- Some complained
of neck, back and knee pain.
No fire was found inside the plane.
Police and mechanics are checking the plane to try to find out where the
smoke was coming from.
Meantime, a Continental Airlines jetliner overshot a runway at Washington
D-C's National Airport and is now stuck in the mud.
No one was injured--buses were brought in to transport passengers from the
plane to the terminal.

place in Roanoke County.

Sources say Governor Allen will visit the area, perhaps as early as
tomorrow, to announce the location of a high-tech printing company in Valley
TechPark, an industrial park located in the western section of the county.
Sources add the company will likely employ several hundred people, and it

No one from Roanoke County would comment.

The deadly Ebola virus has appeared again, killing villagers in the remote
West African Village, Gabon.
Thirteen people have died there, and others are infected and under
Ebola is one of the deadliest viruses known to man.
It causes internal and external bleeding and is spread through bodily
It kills up to 80 percent of those infected.
There is no treatment and no cure.
The height of the flu season is over, but it turned out to be deadlier than
The Centers for Disease Control says the harsh Johannesburg strain struck
more people than officials predicted.
Doctors had thought a milder Texas strain would dominate.
The flu season began in October and peaked in late December, sweeping the
Flu deaths began to decline in late January.
Flu contributes to the deaths of about 20-thousand people each year.
