More than 500 Virginia high school seniors may not receive diplomas this
spring because they failed the Literacy Passport tests, which measure
sixth-grade level skills.
This month is their last chance to pass before graduation.
Some of the students have learning disabilities, and some are foreign-born
students who have trouble with English.
But others simply have not been able to pass.
The class of 1996 is the first group to face of the ultimatum of the
Literacy Passport.

Fireworks is negotiating with Alliant Techsystems, the company which operates
the Radford Arsenal.
He says federal ARMS incentives help make the arsenal especially attractive.
The ARMS initiative was enacted to encourage commercial industries to create
jobs at arsenals hurt by defense downsizing.
Grucci has handled the fireworks displays for the last four U.S.
presidential inaugurations.

The bodies were discovered at about four a.m. on State Route 8-41 AFTER a
passerby noticed a THIRD victim lying in the road.
Investigators believe 19- year old Sydney Hairston of Martinsville and 25-
year old Darrell Womack of Axton were shot to death- but they are awaiting
autopsy results.
The victim found lying in the road was 27- year old Knova Day of Axton.
He's in serious condition at a Danville hospital.

shooting in Amherst Monday night.

Police say 27- year- old Juan Jose Ochoa (OCHO-A) shot and killed a 22- year
old Hispanic male during an argument in the Town Court Mobile Home Park.
The victim's name has not been released. He was pronounced dead at the scene
with multiple gunshot wounds to the chest.
After briefly fleeing the area, Ochoa returned a half an hour after the
shooting and was arrested without incident.
