The search is on for a man wanted in connection with a double murder Tuesday
in Pittsylvania County.
Authorities issued a capital murder warrant for 24 year old Mark Anthony
Carter of Axton.
He's is wanted for questioning in the murders of 19 year old Sydney Hairston
of Martinsville and 25 year old Darrell Womack of Axton.
Womack and Hairston were found shot to death ouside an abandoned store on
Mark Anthony Carter is a white male, 5-feet 10 inches tall, weighing 173
Authorities consider him armed and dangerous.
Virginia's teachers may see more cash in their pay checks.
The House today okayed an almost four percent pay raise over two years.
But ss Ellen Qualls reports the money did not come easily.

An emotional crowd gathered in Pittsylvania County tonight to voice concern
over the closing of a local school.
Whitmell Elementary is slated to shut down at the end of the school year
despite pleas from local residents.
Teresa Hamilton reports, school board members expressed sympathy but say
there's little that can be done.

Gerald Marlowe's plea was similar to that echoed by the nearly 175- parents
and concerned residents gathered at Whitmell Elementary.
Members of the County School Board were on hand to hear their concerns.
Parents are worried that consolidating with Mount Herman Elementary will
place their children at a disadvantage.
Their number one argument-- the new school, already under construction, is

Governon Allen said the failure to contain criminals will NOT be tolerated
by his administration.
That's after 38- year- old Geoffrey Ward escaped from a Powhatan prison
He was captured today.
Ward climbed a razor-wire fence and ran across a field to get away from
Powhatan Correctional Facility.
He was serving eight life sentences for raping and killing a 14- year- old
girl and a 38- year- old woman in 1984.
Ward was taken into custody this afternoon in Louisa County, about 15 miles
from the prison.
Allen has called for a state police investigation to determine how Ward
A regional homicide task force will assist in the investigation of a body
discovered near Leesville Lake today.
The body apparently was discovered off Route 6-0-8, about five miles from
the Pittsylvania County line.
Residents say the body was found at the bottom of a steep drop- off that
made it difficult to see from the road.
Within hours of a murder on New Year's Night on Brambleton Avenue-
the man accused of killing Christopher Wilson showed up at a friend's house in
the victim's car.
At today's preliminary hearing, Christopher Martin testified there was some
