A Roanoke County man could only watch as his home on Montclair Drive was destroyed by fire this morning.
Firefighters LOST the battle against the blaze which was stoked by high winds.
The fire marshal says cigarette ashes dumped in a trash can started the fire.
The blaze then spread to a nearby sofa and gas grill.

Officials say as soon as firefighters controlled the blaze... strong winds whipped the flames in a different direction.
The owner, Lesse (LESS) Sickler, was in the basement of the house when the fire began.
He says he heard a loud swooshing noise and by the time he returned upstairs the porch was engulfed in flames.
He and his three dogs were able to make it out of the house, but the family cat is still missing.
The fire marshal says the blaze appears to have started in the back of the house.

A Chatham woman died in a car accident last night.
State Police say 52-year-old Laura Edwards Shelton was trying to make a left hand turn when her Ford Thunderbird was struck by a pickup truck.
The accident happened in Pittsylvania County on route 40 near 7-74.
Shelton died at the scene.
The accident is still under investigation.

Workers at the Greensboro center say they are paid less than other K-Mart workers, because most of their employees are black.

A reorganization at DuPont's Nylon plant in Martinsville will cost several managers their jobs.
The positions eliminated include people who do NOT supervise hourly employees and engineers.
The latest survey by Manpower Incorporated says job prospects will improve this spring in the Roanoke area; with 13-percent of employers planning to add people, and only three-percent planning to cut back.
In greater Lynchburg, 23-percent plan to add workers, but 10-percent expect to cut back.
Vaughan Furniture plans to create 300 new jobs in Patrick County over the next few years.
The company will construct a furniture plant in the county's new industrial park.
Some changes for two banks in Southside Virginia.
People's Bank of Danville has changed its name to Peoples National Bank, and it will spin off existing offices in Lynchburg and Fredricksburg.
Meanwhile the South Boston Bank is now Community National Bank.
It has also filed applications to put branches in Henderson and Louisburg, North Carolina.
Checking the Dow Jones Industrial Average for the week, it dropped 94-points, closing at 55-36 point-56.

Jeff Gordon led 72 laps early in the race and he was the leader with 216 laps left in the 400 lap event.
The save of the day goes to Sterling Marlin he gets lose and hits the wall in turn one but he was able to save the car and keep racing.
South boston's Jeff Burton passed Dale Jarrett to lead the race with over 100-laps left in the event.
Then Darrell Waltrip got hit in the rear by Ward Burton sending his car into the wall and Bringing out the Caution.
