The resident, Harry Leonard, escaped without injury.
Authorities say he is deaf and mute.

Investigators say the blaze caused about 25-thousand dollars damage.
No word on what caused the fire.

He says he heard a loud swooshing noise and by the time he returned upstairs the porch was engulfed in flames.
He and his three dogs were able to make it out of the house, but the family cat is still missing.
Ferguson says the roof caved in preventing firefighters from entering the house.
No one was hurt in the blaze.
The fire marshal says the fire was sparked by cigarette ashes dumped into a trash can.

A Martinsville woman is dead in what police describe as a HIGH speed car crash last night.
They say 40-year-old Teresa Hamby-Kendrick was driving at a HIGH rate of speed on Route 1-74 when her car ran OFF the road, OVER an embankment and struck a tree.
The accident happened at about nine o'clock. Hamby-Kendrick died a short time later at the hospital.

The owner, Lesse (LESS) Sickler, was in the basement of the house when the fire began.
He says he heard a loud swooshing noise and by the time he returned upstairs the porch was engulfed in flames.
He and his three dogs were able to make it out of the house, but the family cat is still missing.
The fire marshal says the blaze appears to have started in the back of the house.

A Martinsville woman is dead after her car went airborne and struck a tree last night.
Police say say 40-year-old Teresa Hamby-Kendrick was driving at a high rate of speed on Route 174 when her car ran off the road.
The accident happened at about nine o'clock, Hamby-Kendrick died a short time later at the hospital.

Henry County authorities ended a standoff early Sunday morning by breaking into a motel room after six hours of negotiations.
The suspect had a female hostage in the room.

At about midnight -- a Henry County investigator spotted a car sought by North Carolina authorities parked outside the King's Court Motel on Route 2-20.
The driver of the car, 30- year old Lawson McCollum, had allegedly abducted a 22- year old Eden woman from her home.
Officers had to use a chemical agent thrown through a window before forcing their way in.
Authorities say the woman and McCollum previously dated.
McCollum has been charged with "abduction with attempt to defile", "rape" and "robbery by force."
