with a man suspected of attempted murder as well as the robbery of two

A Lynchburg man escaped injury when his house caught fire earlier tonight.
Firefighters were called to the 29- hundred block of Campbell Avenue just
Smoke and flames were coming from the front of the building when they
Crews were able to knock the fire down in about ten minutes.
Authorities at first thought the residents of the home were trapped inside,
but the only man at home escaped unharmed.
The fire apparently started in a couch in a front room.
The rest of the building had smoke and water damage.
The man accused of killing a Danville bartender five years ago is heading
A Pittsylvania County jury late this afternoon found 42 year old Thomas
Martin NOT guilty.
Martin was arrested last fall for shooting and killing 41 year old Paul
Five years ago, DeShazo's corvette was found burning.
His body was discovered nearby six days later.
Prosecutors did NOT have an eye witness.
But they did present testimony from a man who said Martin confessed.
In closing arguments, the defense argued the case was circumstantial.
They also presented witnesses who said they did NOT see a van next to the
burning car resembling the one owned by Martin.

Prosecutor David Grimes would not comment on the verdict.

Concerned teachers and parents packed a Lynchburg city school board budget
Educators say the city could cut its local school funding by as much as four
percent next year, a decrease of more than 840- thousand dollars.
Without that money, school officials say they might have to cut or eliminate
items like the middle school DARE program and the pre- kindergarten program.

Wythe County administrator Billy Branson says due to INACTION at tonight's
board of supervisors meeting, he may be forced to seek legal action against the
Tracy Altizer reports.

((Billy Branson is questioning the legality of a board meeting on January
It took place in former chairman Mark Munsey's office, rather than the
regular board room. It was called a work session, but members admittedly
discussed the county administrator and agreed then to ask for his resignation.
Branson has asked Munsey for the minutes of that meeting.
Chairman Charles Dix says none were taken, but Munsey told Branson he would
raise the issue at this board meeting.
Munsey tried to convene an executive session for that purpose, to discuss
the matter behind closed doors.

But objections from the media raised concern over whether an executive
session would be legal in this case.

Branson then offered to meet with Dix and supervisor Bucky Sharitz to settle
the matter peacefully, but he says Munsey put his foot down.

The House is expected to give its approval tomorrow, and the President
has promised to sign it.
Botetourt County Sheriff Reed Kelly will not be charged with assault.
A grand jury said no to the charges today.
It was October that Kelly got a letter from an inmate describing in detail
how he was going to kill the sheriff, and his family.
The prisoner said Kelly beat and choked him after reading the letter.
Kelly accused his opponents of playing dirty politics during election time.

The Lynchburg Commonwealth's Attorney who handled the case says he believes
this will be the end of it.
The Virginia State Police say human error was partially to blame for a
prison breakout last month in the Richmond area.
Convicted murderer and rapist Geoffrey Ward climbed out a kitchen vent and
scaled five fences to escape the Powhatan Correctional Center.
Three prison workers are now under disciplinary review.
But State Police say there was NO indication of criminal wrongdoing by any
Ward was captured just over a day after his escape.

A giant volcano is erupting near Mexico City-
It began spewing ash and smoke into the air earlier today-
Mexican T-V showed grey clouds of ash and sulphur rising from the 18
thousand foot crater.
The volcano is 25 miles east of Mexico City.
Officials say six small tremors shook the volcano into action-
So far no reports of damage and no immediate need for evacuations.
The last time this volcano erupted was in 1994 when several thousand
residents had to flee.
The ACC Tourney gets underway on Thursday night and tonight the conference
passed out some post season honors to first year players with the release of
the ACC all-freshman team.
Only one player was a unanimous selection and that was none other than point

Ken Simpson's sculpture depicts a fireman holding the lifeless body of a
