A Lynchburg man escaped injury when his house caught fire earlier tonight.

Firefighters were called to the 29- hundred block of Campbell Avenue just before nine.
Smoke and flames were coming from the front of the building when they arrived.
Crews were able to knock the fire down in about ten minutes.
Authorities at first thought the residents of the home were trapped inside, but the only man at home escaped unharmed.
The fire apparently started in a couch in a front room.
The rest of the building had smoke and water damage.

The man accused of killing a Danville bartender five years ago is heading home.
A Pittsylvania County jury late this afternoon found 42 year old Thomas Martin NOT guilty.

Martin was arrested last fall for shooting and killing 41 year old Paul Nathaniel DeShazo.
Five years ago, DeShazo's corvette was found burning.
His body was discovered nearby six days later.
Prosecutors did NOT have an eye witness.
But they did present testimony from a man who said Martin confessed.
In closing arguments, the defense argued the case was circumstantial.
They also presented witnesses who said they did NOT see a van next to the burning car resembling the one owned by Martin.

It took place in former chairman Mark Munsey's office, rather than the regular board room. It was called a work session, but members admittedly discussed the county administrator and agreed then to ask for his resignation.
Branson has asked Munsey for the minutes of that meeting.
Chairman Charles Dix says none were taken, but Munsey told Branson he would raise the issue at this board meeting.
Munsey tried to convene an executive session for that purpose, to discuss the matter behind closed doors.

Convicted murderer and rapist Geoffrey Ward climbed out a kitchen vent and scaled five fences to escape the Powhatan Correctional Center.
Three prison workers are now under disciplinary review.
But State Police say there was NO indication of criminal wrongdoing by any corrections workers.
Ward was captured just over a day after his escape.

A giant volcano is erupting near Mexico City-

It began spewing ash and smoke into the air earlier today-
Mexican T-V showed grey clouds of ash and sulphur rising from the 18 thousand foot crater.
The volcano is 25 miles east of Mexico City.
Officials say six small tremors shook the volcano into action-
So far no reports of damage and no immediate need for evacuations.
The last time this volcano erupted was in 1994 when several thousand residents had to flee.

The Charlotte Hornets played host to the redhot Orlando Magic last night and they would get toasted 123-to-97 by Penny and the boys.

Anfernee "Penny" Hardaway blistered the Hornets for 27 points and 10 assists as the Magic won for the sixth time in the last seven games.
The Magic hit 58 percent for the floor to win 123-to-97.

The work of a Franklin County artist- -a tribute to heroes and victims of the Oklahoma City bombing- -reached its destination yesterday.

The half-ton metal sculpture arrived on the back of a flat- bed truck-- standing up.
Ken Simpson's sculpture depicts a fireman holding the lifeless body of a child.
Simpson made the trip to Oklahoma himself, together with Dan Kauffman of Gates Transfer which donated use of the truck.
The sculpture doesn't have a home yet... but could go in the park that's been proposed to replace the bombed out federal building. (----------------)
