In the wake of January's fatal fire in Roanoke, a new group is speaking out
to support a proposed rental inspection program.

Jean, the group is named for the four Leftwich children who were killed
along with their grandmother in January's fire on Stewart Avenue.
Also for Madeline Tate, the woman who froze to death in her home near tenth

Virginia's Senate voted today to take some of the teeth out of last year's
welfare reform law.
A bill already approved by the House would amend the part of the law that
makes women identify the father of any child who's getting welfare benefits.
The Senators gave some power back to social workers.
They could decide if the family should still receive benefits without
identifying the father if the mother is a victim of rape or incest.

She became a Grand Ole Opry star in 1940 and spent 20 years on T-V's Hee-

It's something people always complain about, but nothing's ever done to

In Lynchburg, police are taking a pro-active stance against vandalism, and
they're having a "blast" doing it.
With the help of private donations, the department outfitted its own
"environmental response unit" to respond to neighborhood complaints.
